Upcoming Releases, August 2018

We're headed to August, and with it comes the end of the summer movie season. That's a a mixed bag. We'll start to see more serious award contender releases in September and we'll move away from the blockbusters that really are a hallmark of the summer. But we still have a few left to enjoy during the Dog Days of Summer in August!

Friday, August 3:
The Spy Who Dumped Me
: This comedy send up of James Bond sees a pair of ladies, played by Mila Kunis and Kate McKinnon, pulled into the world of espionage. It's been an uneven summer for comedies, but this one gives me some hope.

Disney's Christopher Robin: Ewan McGreggor takes the lead as an adult Christopher Robin who still needs a little Pooh Bear in his life to point him in the right direction. This looks like a feel good movie for late summer.

The Darkest Minds: Based on a YA book, and featuring and adult cast that includes Mandy Moore, this film is an apocalyptic world where some super-powered kids are needed to save humanity.

Death of a Nation: Faux documentary filmmaker Dinesh D'Souza is back at it with a take on U.S. History that is high on political rhetoric and doesn't concern itself with anything resembling facts.

Friday, August 10:
The Meg
: The best film of summer finally arrives. That's right, it's Jason Statham versus a pre-historic killer shark. Just try to stop me from watching this!

Slenderman: This is a horror movie of a different sort, starring Joey King and based on the urban legend.

A.X.L.: This family-friendly tale involves a robotic dog and has a very under-the-radar marketing campaign.

Dog Days: This romantic comedy follows the lives of various dog owners.

Wednesday, August 15:
Crazy, Rich Asians
: This comedy, based on a popular novel, looks like it could be a lot of fun and a late summer gem.

Friday, August 17:
Alpha
: This film is an adventure that goes back before the dawn of organized civilization.

Mile 22: This action film about a covert group that handles problems the government can't take on directly features a strong cast that's led by Mark Wahlberg. This should be a high-octane ride to end the summer.

Friday, August 24:
The Happytime Murders
: This comedy, which is a mixture of live action and puppets, looks like it's squarely aimed at adults. The cast includes Melissa McCarthy, Maya Rudolph and Elizabeth Banks, and the red band trailer gives you the idea this will be filthy.

Wednesday, August 29:
Operation Finale
: This drama starring Oscar Isaac and Ben Kingsley is about the capture of a high-ranking Nazi officer.

Friday, August 31:
The Little Stranger
: This film tells the story of Dr Faraday, the son of a housemaid, who has built a life of quiet respectability as a country doctor. It stars Ruth Wilson and Domhnall Gleeson, and it looks sufficiently creepy.

Kin: This gritty crime drama stars James Franco as a brutal criminal going after a man recently released from prison. So, year, it's a feel good story....

Juliet, Naked: This off-beat romantic comedy stars Rose Byrne, Chris O'Dowd and Ethan Hawke. It looks like a bit of a quirky adventure.
