2018 Broncos' Season, Pre-Season Week 2

The Broncos played their second pre-season game last night. Some of it was a lot better than the first. Some of it left me feeling cold.

Pre-Season Week 2: Chicago Bears 24, Denver Broncos 23
Pre-Season Record: 0-2 (0-2 Home)
Key Play: In the second quarter, with the Broncos leading 13-7, Chad Kelly connected with Courtland Sutton on a 16-yard TD pass to put the Broncos up 20-7 at the first half was drawing to a close.

Recap: Last week was a bit alarming in what we didn't see from the Broncos on offense. But patience was preached as the first team didn't really play much. But the clear star of Week 1 was Kelly, who was promoted to QB2 for this week. And this game had to leave Bronco fans feeling a lot better. Von Miller played, and though Chris Harris sat out the Broncos, the defense looked better, getting pressure, making stops and getting turnovers. And the offense actually showed up, too. Case Keenum moved the team well, and got some folks involved. It was nice to see Emmanuel Sanders, Jeff Heuerman, DaeSean Hamilton and Courtland Sutton as a part of the offense. Devontae Booker looked decent and Royce Freeman scored another touchdown (though he didn't look too explosive). And Philip Lindsay continues to impress. So, too, does Kelly. And the Broncos had a 23-10 lead late into the third quarter with the first two units on the field. The Bears left Chase Daniel and the second team in and were able to score 14 points late to win, while Paxton Lynch again struggled, this time with the third team. So not everything was great, and it was a bummer to lose the game, but it's pre-season. We saw enough of what counts to be excited about the future. Let's hope next week's dress rehearsal in Washington goes well.

Game Balls:
* Courtland Sutton.
The rookie WR continues to impress, nearly pulling off a big deep pass with Keenum (which drew pass interference and set up the first touchdown) and then hauling in a 16-yard strike from Kelly.
* Jeff Heuerman. The Broncos need someone to step up at tight end, and Heuerman looked like he could be the guy last night. He caught two balls for 21 yards and a two-point conversion.
* Philip Lindsay. The guy continues to impress, whether returning kicks and punts, covering on Special Teams or as a running back. He led the team with six carries for 32 yards, and is fast becoming my favorite Bronco.
* Justin Simmons, Bradley Chubb and DeMarcus Walker. The young defenders are stepping up. Chubb had a sack for a safety, Simmons recorded an interception, and Walker also had a sack while looking more at home back as his natural position of defensive end.

Lingering Concerns:
*Depth.
The Broncos have some depth in some areas, but not in others. Will Parks was dinged last night, and the secondary depth is a question. So, too, is the second group along the offensive line.
* Paxton Lynch. He's looking more and more like a bust, and the question is what the Broncos will do going forward. Can it be Keenum and Kelly alone?
