Emmy Predictions

The Emmys are Monday night and are easily the awards I most often forget about, because they are in September, and have the hardest time guessing, because unlike films in a single year this is based on shows that you may not watch anymore. But here goes nothing.

Below are best guesses on what will win Monday night in the big categories.

Drama Series
“The Handmaid’s Tale”
“Game of Thrones”
“This Is Us”
“The Crown”
“The Americans”
“Stranger Things”
“Westworld”

Winner: Game of Thrones. Call this a homer pick if you want, but I think the Emmys go with "Thrones." It should really be "The Americans," but I don't think it has the juice. The rest of the shows on this list had flaws, and I think the "Game of Thrones" narrative propels it to victory.

Comedy Series
“Atlanta” (FX)
“Barry” (HBO)
“Black-ish” (ABC)
“Curb Your Enthusiasm” (HBO)
“GLOW” (Netflix)
“The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” (Amazon)
“Silicon Valley” (HBO)
“The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt” (Netflix)

Winner: Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. Again, a category with a lot of possibilities. I wouldn't be surprised to see "Atlanta" go here, but I'm going with "Maisel." Another worthy choice would be "GLOW."

Limited Series
“The Alienist”
“The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story”
“Genius: Picasso”
“Godless”
“Patrick Melrose”

Winner: The Assassination of Gianni Versace. This is a category I'm not fond of. Only one of these ("Godless") did I even enjoy. But I think "American Crime Story" takes it.

Lead Actor in a Drama Series:
Jason Bateman (“Ozark”)
Sterling K. Brown (“This Is Us”)
Ed Harris (“Westworld”)
Matthew Rhys (“The Americans”)
Milo Ventimiglia (“This Is Us”)
Jeffrey Wright (“Westworld”)

Winner: Sterling K. Brown. I wanted to lean toward Rhys, but I'm going with Brown.

Lead Actress in a Drama Series:
Claire Foy (“The Crown”)
Tatiana Maslany (“Orphan Black”)
Elisabeth Moss (“The Handmaid’s Tale”)
Sandra Oh (“Killing Eve”)
Keri Russell (“The Americans”)
Evan Rachel Wood (“Westworld”)

Winner: Keri Russell. I think "The Americans" gets at least one.

Lead Actor in a Comedy Series:
Donald Glover (“Atlanta”)
Bill Hader (“Barry”)
Anthony Anderson (“Black-ish”)
William H. Macy (“Shameless”)
Larry David (“Curb Your Enthusiasm”)
Ted Danson (“The Good Place”)

Winner: Donald Glover. I think this is where "Atlanta" gets some recognition.

Lead Actress in a Comedy Series:
Pamela Adlon (“Better Things”)
Rachel Brosnahan (“The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel”)
Tracee Ellis Ross (“Black-ish”)
Allison Janney (“Mom”)
Lily Tomlin (“Grace and Frankie”)
Issa Rae (“Insecure”)

Winner: Rachel Brosnahan. This is a toss up, so I'm going with my preference here.

Lead Actor in a Limited Series or Movie:
Antonio Banderas (“Genius: Picasso”)
Darren Criss (“The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story”)
Benedict Cumberbatch (“Patrick Melrose”)
Jeff Daniels (“The Looming Tower”)
John Legend (“Jesus Christ Superstar”)
Jesse Plemons (“USS Callister”)

Winner: Jesse Plemons. A total shot in the dark, but it was a really good episode.

Lead Actress in a Limited Series or Movie:
Laura Dern (“The Tale”)
Jessica Biel (“The Sinner”)
Michelle Dockery (“Godless”)
Edie Falco (“The Menendez Murders”)
Regina King (“Seven Seconds”)
Sarah Paulson (“American Horror Story: Cult”)

Winner: Michelle Dockery. Another gut call. I liked her a lot in this role.

Supporting Actor in a Drama Series
Nikolaj Coster-Waldau (“Game of Thrones”)
Peter Dinklage (“Game of Thrones”)
Joseph Fiennes (“The Handmaid’s Tale”)
David Harbour (“Stranger Things”)
Mandy Patinkin (“Homeland”)
Matt Smith (“The Crown”)

Winner: David Harbour. He was great in season 2.

Supporting Actress in a Drama Series

Winner: Thandie Newton. It was an uneven season, but she was probably the best part.

Winner: Betty Gilpin. She does a great job. This is such a full category, it's almost impossible to guess.
