Fantasy Movie League: Slow Start to March

After a fast and furious February, the movies are taking a little breather. Last weekend 2018 officially wrapped up with the Academy Awards, and next weekend the 2019 blockbuster season begins with Captain Marvel. So it makes sense for Hollywood to take a beat. But more on that in a minute.

Last week I thought How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World was the best anchor, and it was. It even bested its projections. And I thought Happy Death Day 2U could return value, and I placed in on five screens. It did, becoming the Best Performer. So, wouldn’t you know it, I actually scored a Perfect Cineplex. Of course, it was also the Most Popular Cineplex. But, still, an achievement is an achievement. Can it be duplicated?

This week there are only two wide releases, and neither is too inspiring. As always, if you think you’re better at the game than me, I encourage you to join me in a Fantasy Life App Blog league! You can join the league here. Let’s see how this week stacks up.

New at the Box Office:

The biggest new release this week is Tyler Perry’s A Madea Family Funeral. The film is $363 FML Bucks, second most in the game, and figures to be second at the Box Office, too. It doesn’t have a Rotten Tomatoes score yet, but it doesn’t figure to be great. I also hardly think it matters to the target audience. The Madea franchise is pretty well established by now and has its core audience, for good and for ill. Fantasy Movie League projects second place with $22.8 million. The other sites are similar, with Box Office Pro calling for $22.8 million and Box Office Report calling for $22 million. So unless you think it’s going to bust bigger, it won’t be a good value candidate. It might be an OK anchor.
The only other new release is Greta, the thriller starring Chloe Grace Moretz. This one boasts a measly 60 percent on Rotten Tomatoes. It also doesn’t look great. It’s just $126 FML Bucks and Fantasy Movie League sees it fourth with $5.6 million. But they are more bullish. Box Office Pro is lower with just $3.5 million, while Box Office Report sees just $4.4 million. That makes it a stay away for me.

The Search for the Best Value:

How to Train Your Dragon’s third film scored big week one with more than $55 million. It’s the most expensive option in the game at $501 FML Bucks, and is projected at $32.5 million by Fantasy Movie League, $32 million by Box Office Pro and just $30 million by Box Office Report. It would need another huge weekend in order to best expectations and return a solid value. So it might not be the ideal anchor this week.

I like the potential for Alita: Battle Angel to provide some good value. It’s $111 FML Bucks, and Fantasy Movie League is the lowest on it by nearly a million. That could help give your Cineplex a boost.

This Week’s Lineup:

If you get the Best Value, and have it on all your screens, the bonuses are nuts. I’m taking the big swing this week.
