Upcoming Releases—May, 2019

While "Avengers: Endgame" is kicking off the summer movie season this weekend, Summer at the movies really begins with May. We're here, time to see what awaits us!

Friday, May 3:
The Intruder
—Well, I guess we can just watch "Avengers" again... This weird psychological thriller features Michael Ealy and Dennis Quaid. Both can and should be in better movies.

Long Shot—Summer is always a sneaky good time for comedies, and this one with Charlize Theron as a high-profile politician and Seth Rogen as her new beau looks like a winner. Sign me up.

Ugly Dolls—And one for the kiddos. This animated feature looks a little weird to me. It's been a great year for animated films, and this one boasts a good cast and soundtrack, but consider me skeptical.

The Last Summer—Yes, this is a Netflix release. But it features teen stars like Maia Mitchell and KJ Apa, so it could be an appealing option for a certain demographic.

Friday, May 10:
The Hustle
—This comedy is a re-make of sorts, but with a female twist starring Rebel Wilson and Anne Hathaway. It looks like a good bit of fun. So early summer might be a nod to comedies.

Detective Pikachu—Speaking of comedies, this one will have more of a broad appeal. But with voice work from Ryan Reynolds, there's reason to think it could be entertaining.

Tolkien—Nicholas Hoult takes the lead in this biopic of the famous author behind "Lord of the Rings." It feels an odd time of year for a biopic, but this one has the potential to be a good one.

Wine Country—Another week of summer, another Netflix release. This one is a comedy starring and directed by Amy Poehler. It also has SNL alums Rachel Dratch and Maya Rudolph. It ought to be a good one.

Friday, May 17:
John Wick Chapter 3
—Keanu Reeves fans rejoice as his titular assassin is back for a third go around. This one promises to be action-packed.

The Sun is Also a Star—This romance has an interesting twist in that it takes place over an afternoon with one of them facing deportation. The idea sounds politically charged, but the trailer is sweet. It could be a bit of counter-programming.

A Dog's Journey—This pet re-incarnation tale is a sequel to "A Dog's Purpose" that brings Quaid out for the second time in May. This one appears to be more on brand.

Friday, May 24:
Aladdin
—Will Smith steps into the role of the Genie while Guy Ritchie directs this live-action musical. I was skeptical for a while, but that full-length trailer sold me. I am actually low-key pumped to see what they do with this one.

BrightBurn—What if Superman arrived on Earth but wasn't a hero? This film from "Guardians" director James Gunn asks that what if, turning the origin story of the Man of Steel into a horror movie concept. It looks creepy if a little strange as a concept.

Booksmart—This comedy, from director Olivia Wilde, follows a couple of book worms who decide to show everyone they're fun on the eve of graduation. Another interesting summer comedy.

Ad Astra—Little is known about this space-themed film aside from the fact it stars Brad Pitt and Tommy Lee Jones. It will try to make a little headway in a crowded late May slate.

Friday, May 31:
Godzilla: King of the Monsters
—This one looks like the pick of the month, a big spectacle monster movie with a cast that includes Millie Bobby Brown, Vera Farmiga and Kyle Chandler. Count me in.

Rocketman—Another high-profile film to end the month, this musical biopic tells the story of Elton John and figures to draw a crowd.

Ma—This horror film of sorts stars Octavia Spencer as a middle-age adult who terrorizes teens that just want to party. There is never a bad time of year for horror films, but there are bad horror films. I'm not sold on this.
