Here's a look at the new movie I saw this week.

Godzilla: King of the Monsters
Starring:
Vera Farmiga, Millie Bobby Brown, Kyle Chandler, Bradley Whitford, Ken Watanabe, and Charles Dance
Synopsis: Summer movies are about a lot of things, but chief among them is spectacle. People are looking for an escape. An escape from the heat. An escape from life. An escape from having to think too hard. We want to be pulled away for a couple hours and entertained. Sadly, many of the blockbusters released in the summer of 2019 haven't been good enough to provide that escape. That's probably why "Godzilla: King of the Monsters" stands out for me. It's not that it is a great film. It isn't. And it's not that it's a deep film. It isn't. But it's eye-popping, has a good enough story and presents plenty of fun action and escape. After all, at some level, who doesn't love a good monster story. And this one is buoyed by some fine actors, led by Chandler and Farmiga, as well as a different kind of role for "Stranger Things" lead Brown. All do quite well, and at times this movie generates more emotions than most of the blockbusters we've seen this year. The plot isn't too complex, and in fact it isn't much of  a surprise, but it's a fun ride. At the end of the day, that's what you want from these films released in the middle of summer, and "Godzilla" delivers.
Rating: PG-13 for sequences of monster action violence and destruction, and for some language.
Verdict: Three stars out of four.

Upcoming Releases:
Friday, June 28
: "Annabelle Comes Home," "Yesterday"
