2019 Broncos' Season, Wide Receivers

The NFL Draft is over, and free agency has slowed to a trickle. As we look toward Training Camp and a new season, I'll be looking at the position groups as they stand. Today, it's time to consider the Wide Receivers.

Wide Receivers:
On the Roster:
Emmanuel Sanders, Courtland Sutton, DaeSean Hamilton, Tim Patrick, River Cracraft, Juwann Winfree, Brendan Langley, Trinity Benson, Fred Brown, Steve Dunbar, Kelvin McKnight, Nick Williams, Jamarius Williams

Roster Group: This is an interesting group with plenty of interesting players lower on the roster. That's going to make for some difficult decisions toward the end of the training camp, especially since the top of the roster seems set. The biggest question for Sanders is if he'll be healthy and a full go for Week 1. He's tracking that way, but we'll have to see if it ends up that way. Sutton and Hamilton, in year two, are locks for the roster and meaningful roles with the team. And Patrick is fairly well set as the fourth WR, someone who was a great player in the pre-season in 2018 and contributed at the end of the regular season as well. So with four seemingly set, the question is who fills the final one or two spots. Last year the Broncos kept only five receivers so that they had spots for other positions. If that ends up being the case, the remaining nine players in the position group are fighting for one spot. If they keep six, two will make it. I'd also suspect one or two guys here are candidates for the Practice Squad, but for now the focus is on the regular roster. There's a few interesting candidates here. Cracraft is struggling with an injury, but he was a fan and coach favorite last year, someone that stayed around the team despite not making the final roster. He's also a decent return player, and could be a good addition to the depth chart. Winfree was a sixth round selection who has flashed in camp and could be a tough one to get to the Practice Squad if he brings that to the pre-season. Langley was a corner for the Broncos and has moved to receiver. He's also fast and a great Special Teams contributor. Nick Williams, recently signed, worked with Rich Scangarello in Atlanta, and comes in knowing the offense and scheme, which could give him an edge. And finally, McKnight and Benson are undrafted free agents from small schools that have made an impression, gotten reps with the ones and been featured on the local news. In short, the Broncos have a lot of options and the five pre-season games are going to be crucial in determining the bottom of this position group.

Roster Projections: Right now, I'm saying the Broncos will hold six receivers, and Special Teams will make a lot of the difference. Sanders, Sutton, Hamilton and Patrick are locks. I think right now Cracraft and Langley have the edge. We'll see how that changes as the team goes through pre-season games.
