Fantasy Movie League: Summer has Fallen

For much of the country, the idea of a new school year has set in. The College Football season begins in earnest next weekend, and the NFL regular season is nearly here. Fall is upon us, and that means the flood of summer films is coming to an end. And for the first time in weeks, we have a clear top release dominating the weekend, but more on that in a minute.

Last weekend there were a ton of options, but it seemed to me that Good Boys was the best best for value and as an anchor, so I loaded up with the film on five screens. It was, indeed, the Best Value, and playing it on five screens was the winning move. It was those last three screens that were the difference between a Perfect Cineplex and just a good week for me, again. And, again, I was tantalizingly close, with the Perfect Cineplex bonus making up most of the difference. I’m in a good groove, but there is still work to be done.

This week there are four new movies added to the game, but only one that’s really in line to take the top spot, the sequel Angel Has Fallen. Gerard Butler is back as the Secret Service agent who has presided over the most lavish assassination attempts in history. But is is the Best Value for your Cineplex? Let’s find out. As always, if you think you’re better at the game than me, I encourage you to join me in a Fantasy Life App Blog league! You can join the league here. On to this week’s competition.

New at the Box Office:

The top option, as mentioned, is Angel Has Fallen, the third film in this franchise. And it’s likely to draw a crowd despite some critical flaws. The film has a 47 percent critical score on Rotten Tomatoes, but I don’t think it will keep the target audience from flocking to the film. It costs just $253 FML Bucks, but that’s most in the game. It’s projected at $15.2 million, and first place, but Fantasy Movie League and $15 million by Box Office Pro, and first place. Box Office Report sees it in first place, too, but at only $13.5 million, meaning it might not be a great choice as anchor.
The next biggest release is the thriller Ready or Not, which actually opened on Wednesday. It’s priced at $175 FML Bucks, second most in the game, and boasts an exceptional 91 percent critical score. But does it have broad appeal? Fantasy Movie League sees $5.8 million, while Box Office Report sees $6.2 million. But Box Office Report sees just $4.8 million. At that price point, this is a total stay away.
The next biggest release is the Christian film Overcomer. It’s $148 FML Bucks and doesn’t have a critical score. But it probably has something of a built-in audience. Box Office Report is the highest at $8.3 million, while Fantasy Movie League sees $7.4 million. But Box Office Pro sees $6.3 million, making it a tough bet for value.
The final new film is the Peanut Butter Falcon, an independent film in limited release going wider this weekend. It has a 94 percent critical score, and it’s just $26 FML Bucks. But will it be a good value? Fantasy Movie League sees $1.7 million, while Box Office Report sees $2.2 million. So it could return some low-end value.

The Search for the Best Value:

Last week Good Boys ran away with the value, and this week it’s priced at $167 FML Bucks, third most in the game. It’s projected mostly in second place, with a take ranging from $12.5 million (Fantasy Movie League) to $10 million (Box Office Pro). That doesn’t give it as good of appeal as a value or an anchor. Hobbs & Shaw and The Lion King are both $114 FML Bucks, and both offer some appeal. Fantasy Movie League sees $7.9 and $7.5 million, respectively, and they are the lowest on both. Box Office Pro sees The Lion King in third at $8.5 million, giving it some appeal as an anchor.

Elsewhere, Angry Birds 2 as some appeal as a value. It’s only $78 FML Bucks, and Fantasy Movie League projected it at $5.7 million. But they’re the lowest, with Box Office Pro seeing $6.5 million and Box Office Report going with $6.7 million.

This Week’s Lineup:

I like the value potential of those Angry Birds.

Angel Has Fallen x2
Angry Birds 2 x6
