The Films of 1999: A Recap

It's hard to believe, but 1999 was 20 years ago. This summer I've been taking a look back at some of my favorites. Below is the 10 I've looked at the past 10 weeks:

* Blast From the Past
* Office Space
* Varsity Blues
* The Mummy
* 10 Things I Hate About You
* For Love of the Game
* Deep Blue Sea
* The Sixth Sense
* The Cider House Rules
* The Matrix

If you've followed along with this series, you know that I picked each of them because they meant something to me and are films that I still enjoy. But that was hardly the only landmark films released that year. Here's a few others that didn't make my list:

* Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace—This was the highest grossing film of the year and one of the most anticipated. I think we can all agree it was a bit of a let down...
* Fight Club—One of the most iconic films of the year, this was a big one from David Fincher. It's my least favorite of his films.
* Toy Story 2—The sequel to the animated smash hit, this one is regarded as one of Pixar's best.
* Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me—The follow up to Austin Powers that introduced the concept of Mini Me.
* Notting Hill and Runaway Bride—It was a big year for Julia Roberts Rom/Coms
* American Beauty—This was the Best Picture winner. It was controversial at the time, and probably even more so now.
* The Insider—This film from Michael Mann was my pick to be Best Picture, but it doesn't feel like a film that's held up as well in the 20 years since.
* The Blair Witch Project—One of the biggest films of the year, and one of the most profitable.
* Magnolia—One of Paul Thomas Anderson's most interesting films and one of Tom Cruise's best performances.

So there you have it, 1999 was quite a year for films. I've listed some of my favorite, and some of the other big releases. Which one was your favorite? Which one holds up best? Post a comment and let me know what you think!
