Emmy Predictions

The annual celebration of television excellence is Sunday Night. Below are my picks for who will win. More like brave dart throws.

Best Comedy Series:

  • Barry
  • Fleabag
  • The Good Place
  • The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel
  • Russian Doll
  • Schitt’s Creek
  • Veep

Prediction: There are a lot of ways this could go. "The Good Place" and "The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel" are good shows, and "Barry" could sneak in there. But I think this comes down to "VEEP," a favorite that wrapped its run and "Fleabag," which was very good in its second season. "Fleabag" should win, I think "VEEP" will win.

Best Drama Series:

  • Better Call Saul
  • Bodyguard
  • Game of Thrones
  • Killing Eve
  • Ozark
  • Pose
  • Succession
  • This Is Us

Prediction: There's a lot of possibilities here, but I think "Game of Thrones" will win because of it being the final season. I also thought it was better than most, so take that for what you will.

Best Limited Series:

  • Chernobyl
  • Escape at Dannemora
  • Fosse/Verdon
  • Sharp Objects
  • When They See Us

Prediction: This category really shows how difficult the Emmys can sometimes be because of the eligibility window. A few of these aired a while ago, while "Sharp Objects" feels even older since it aired last summer. It's been over a year since it wrapped its run. And still, it's eligible here. However, I think a more recent entry, in this case "Chernobyl," will grab the Emmy.

Best Actor, Drama:

  • Jason Bateman, Ozark
  • Sterling K. Brown, This Is Us
  • Kit Harington, Game of Thrones
  • Bob Odenkirk, Better Call Saul
  • Billy Porter, Pose
  • Milo Ventimiglia, This Is Us

Prediction: While the tide for "Game of Thrones" could life Harrington, here, I think this will be an off-the-map choice. I'm going with the Wild Card win in porter.

Best Actress, Drama:

  • Emilia Clarke, Game of Thrones
  • Jodie Comer, Killing Eve
  • Viola Davis, How to Get Away with Murder
  • Laura Linney, Ozark
  • Mandy Moore, This Is Us
  • Sandra Oh, Killing Eve
  • Robin Wright, House of Cards

Prediction: A lot of possibilities here, and you could make a case for just about anyone in the category. But I'm going with Clarke for "Game of Thrones."

Best Supporting Actor, Drama:

  • Jonathan Banks, Better Call Saul
  • Giancarlo Esposito, Better Call Saul
  • Alfie Allen, Game of Thrones
  • Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Game of Thrones
  • Peter Dinklage, Game of Thrones
  • Michael Kelly, House of Cards
  • Chris Sullivan, This Is Us

Prediction: "Game of Thrones" dominates the category with three contenders and my Wild Card pick is Alfie Allen, who had some brilliant and beautiful moments.

Best Supporting Actress, Drama:

  • Gwendoline Christie, Game of Thrones
  • Lena Headey, Game of Thrones
  • Sophie Turner, Game of Thrones
  • Maisie Williams, Game of Thrones
  • Fiona Shaw, Killing Eve
  • Julia Garner, Ozark

Prediction: It feels like a "Game of Thrones" actress will win here, and I'm betting on Gwendoline Christie, who had the best moment in the best episode of the final season.

Best Actor, Comedy:

  • Anthony Anderson, Black-ish
  • Don Cheadle, Black Monday
  • Ted Danson, The Good Place
  • Michael Douglas, The Kominsky Method
  • Bill Hader, Barry
  • Eugene Levy, Schitt’s Creek

Prediction: I'd like to see Danson get the win here for his good work on "The Good Place."

Best Actress, Comedy:

  • Christina Applegate, Dead To Me
  • Rachel Brosnahan, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel
  • Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Veep
  • Natasha Lyonne, Russian Doll
  • Catherine O’Hara, Schitt’s Creek
  • Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Fleabag

Prediction: A lot of great nominees here, but this feels like a two-horse race. Phoebe Waller-Bridge should win, but Julia Louis-Dreyfus has won every year for "VEEP." It feels like she will get the complete set for its final season.

Best Supporting Actor, Comedy:
Stephen Root, Barry
Henry Winkler, Barry
Anthony Carrigan, Barry
Alan Arkin, The Kominsky Method
Tony Shalhoub, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel
Tony Hale, Veep

Prediction: This could go in a lot of ways, and I'd be thrilled to see Winkler win. But I'm hoping that this goes to Shalhoub for a great performance and great season.

Best Supporting Actress, Comedy:

  • Sarah Goldberg, Barry
  • Sian Clifford, Fleabag
  • Olivia Colman, Fleabag
  • Betty Gilpin, GLOW
  • Kate McKinnon, Saturday Night Live
  • Alex Borstein, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel
  • Marin Hinkle, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel
  • Anna Chlumsky, Veep

Prediction: This is another open category, but I'm going with Gilpin, who has done some great work on "GLOW."

Best Actor, Limited Series:

  • Mahershala Ali, True Detective
  • Benicio Del Toro, Escape at Dannemora
  • Hugh Grant, A Very English Scandal
  • Jared Harris, Chernobyl
  • Jharrel Jerome, When They See Us
  • Sam Rockwell, Fosse/Verdon

Prediction: Some great performances here, but I'm going with Harris as the heart of the incredible, and incredibly moving "Chernobyl."

Best Actress, Limited Series:

  • Amy Adams, Sharp Objects
  • Patricia Arquette, Escape at Dannemora
  • Aunjanue Ellis, When They See us
  • Joey King, The Act
  • Niecy Nash, When They See Us
  • Michelle Williams, Fosse/Verdon

Prediction: I think Adams will get the win in a tough field here.

Best Supporting Actor, Limited Series:

  • Ben Whishaw, A Very English Scandal
  • Stellan Skarsgard, Chernobyl
  • Paul Dano, Escape at Dannemora
  • John Leguizamo, When They See Us
  • Michael K. Williams, When They See Us
  • Asante Blackk, When They See Us

Prediction: I think the trio from "When They See Us" may split the vote. My dark horse pick here is Whishaw.

Best Supporting Actress, Limited Series:

  • Emily Watson, Chernobyl
  • Margaret Qualley, Fosse/Verdon
  • Patricia Clarkson, Sharp Objects
  • Patricia Arquette, The Act
  • Marsha Stephanie Blake, When They See Us
  • Vera Farmiga, When They See Us

Prediction: Another tough category, but I think Clarkson will get the nod here.
