Fantasy Movie League: Fast cars and Charle's Angels

Sometimes things don’t work the way you’re expecting. That was certainly true of last week, where Doctor Sleep was projected to take the top spot at the Box Office. It didn’t. Instead, it flopped.

I wasn’t betting on Doctor Sleep, but I did include it on a screen as I thought Zombieland: Double Tap would be a Best Value. I underestimated the draw of Veterans’ Day, as Midway not only soared to the top of the Box Office, but was by far the Best Value. So I was way off the mark. Not a good time to lay an egg, but now I have to put that aside and try to rebound.

This week, there’s three new wide releases as the November onslaught continues. But where’s the value? That’s the question. As always, if you think you’re better at the game than me, I encourage you to join me in a Fantasy Life App Blog league! You can join the league here. On to this week’s competition.

New at the Box Office:

The biggest new release is the biopic Ford vs. Ferrari, which is led by Christian Bale and Matt Damon. And it looks pretty great. It’s also got a critical score of 90 percent. This could be an award contender. At $520 FML Bucks, it’s the most expensive option. Fantasy Movie League projects it at $24.4 million, atop the Box Office. But they are the lowest! Box Office Pro sees $32 million and Box Office Report sees $27 million. So it could be a true value.
Next up is the re-boot of Charlie’s Angels, which isn’t exciting for me. I guess I’m not alone. The film, directed by Elizabeth Banks, has a 65 percent critical score, which isn’t terrible. It’s $234 FML Bucks, second most, and projected at $16.5 million by Fantasy Movie League. Box Office Pro sees $13.2 million and Box Office Report sees $13.5 million, so it seems like a stay away.
The final new release is The Good Liar, a thriller that features Helen Mirren and Ian McKellen facing off. It wasn’t a hit with critics, and is actually the lowest of the new releases with a critical score of 60 percent. It’s $117 FML Bucks and projected at $6 million. Box Office Pro sees $6.3 million and Box Office Report sees $6 million, so the projections are fairly flat.

The Search for the Best Value:

Midway was atop the Box Office and the game with more than $17 million opening weekend. This week it won’t catch people by surprise as much, as it’s priced third most at $143 million, which aligns with projections. Fantasy Movie League sees $10.2 million and Box Office Report sees $10 million. Box Office Pro sees just $8.5 million. So the film would really need to best its projections again to return value.

An under-rated option last week was the John Cena film Playing With Fire. It’s family-friendly, which is a rare thing right now, but has some horrific reviews. It didn’t matter opening weekend, but it might now. It’s $118 FML Bucks, just more than The Good Liar, but has projections much better. Fantasy Movie League sees $8.3 million, and Box Office Report sees $8.2 million, while Box Office Pro sees just $7.2 million. If it’s on the higher end, it could be a good medium value.

This Week’s Lineup:

Here’s the thing, Doctor Sleep bombed last week. But now, based on projections, there might be an over-reaction. I’m going with that.

Charlie’s Angels
Midway x2
Doctor Sleep x5
