Fantasy Movie League: killer families or frozen animation?

We’ve reached Thanksgiving weekend, which will present its own challenges. But more on that in a minute. Last week, Frozen 2 was set to dominate, and split in daily scoring, but it didn’t look like the best value.

I thought Ford v Ferrari offered some good value, and loaded up. The Best Value came from The Good Liar, so my selections didn’t line up with the Perfect Cineplex, which grabbed the Saturday version of Frozen 2 and a lot of The Good Liar. That was also the most popular option, so my November swoon continued. But can I rebound in this final week of the Fall season? Let’s find out.

This week Frozen 2 is still projected atop the Box Office by quite a bit, and is still in daily scoring. But is it the best value? Let’s find out. As always, if you think you’re better at the game than me, I encourage you to join me in a Fantasy Life App Blog league! You can join the league here. On to this week’s competition.

New at the Box Office:

There are two new wide release entries this week, and the biggest of them is Knives Out, the mystery thriller from writer/director Rian Johnson. The film boasts an All-Star cast, and has a critical score of 96 percent, which is pretty awesome. The big challenge this week is that both the new releases were released on Wednesday, thanks to the Thanksgiving holiday. So that could impact the traffic Friday through Sunday, as the film will have gotten a jump (including Tuesday night screenings). Knives Out is the most expensive new release at $269 FML Bucks, and is projected in second place with $16.6 million. But Fantasy Movie League is the lowest, but a lot. Box Office Pro predicts $20.3 million and Box Office Report predicts $22 million. So there could be some value there.
The other new release is Queen & Slim, the new film that feels a bit like a modern-day Bonnie and Clyde. It has a critical score of 86 percent, a very respectable number. And it could be an award contender, which gives it a certain kind of appeal. But it’s not projected to be high at the Box Office this weekend. The film is $119 FML Bucks and projected in fifth place with $6.9 million. Box Office Pro sees $7.1 million, while Box Office Report sees $9 million. So this could also hold some value.

The Search for the Best Value:

Frozen 2 dominated at the Box Office last weekend, but it got off to a bit of a slow start. Still, with so many out of school and looking for something to occupy their time, this one could continue to draw big crowds. It’s projected in first place everywhere, with Box Office Pro calling for $85 million and Box Office Report calling for $89.5 million. Fantasy Movie League has it in daily scoring again, with Friday at $370, Saturday at $355 and Sunday at $220. That aligns with the projections of $33.2 million, $32 million and $19.2 million, respectively. Considering Sunday figures to be a huge travel day, it makes sense there would be a dip. All totaled, that is $84.4 million for the three days, slightly under the other projections. So it’s about figuring out where the value lies if you want Frozen 2 as an anchor.

This Week’s Lineup:

Given the pricing and the projections, Frozen 2 on Saturday looks to be the play.

Frozen 2 (Sat) x2
A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood
Last Christmas x5
