Best Picture Nominees—Little Women

The Academy Awards take place Sunday, February 9. In the run up to that presentation, I'll be previewing each of the nine Best Picture Nominees.

Little Women
Starring
: Saoirse Ronan, Emma Watson, Florence Pugh, Eliza Scanlen, Laura Dern, Meryl Streep, and Timothée Chalamet
Director: Greta Gerwig
Total Nominations: 6
Nominated For: Best Picture, Best Actress (Ronan), Best Supporting Actress (Pugh), Best Adapted Screenplay (Gerwig), Best Costume Design, Best Original Score
About: Tackling a story as familiar, and as oft covered at "Little Women" is no easy task. And making it feel new and fresh is even tougher. Yet that's the trick Gerwig pulled off with this adaptation, which was one of the best films of the year and now a Best Picture nominee. The film earned six total nominations, and is one of the most honored of the year. I think it's a long-shot to win Best Picture, but there are a few categories where it might end up on top. Ronan gives a strong performance, and has somewhat of a chance. But I think the best shots for the film come in the Best Supporting Actress category, where Pugh is a strong contender, and in the Best Original Score category. Gerwig should be rightly praised for her work on this film, but the Adapted Screenplay competition is stacked. She could pull out a win, but I wouldn't be surprised if it doesn't happen. This is a film that should compete in most all the categories where it has a nominee, but it doesn't have any clear paths to a win. Each year several in the Best Picture competition go home empty handed. It remains to be seen if that will be the case with "Little Women."
Rating: PG for thematic elements and brief smoking.
