Fantasy Movie League: The Gentlemen Joins the Fray

Last week we saw a group of new movies open as we headed into the long three-day weekend. The question was where the value would end up, and it’s a question I got partially right. But more on that in a minute. This week we have another two wide releases, but neither is projected to find the top of the Box Office. So where will the value lie? That’s the question.

But first a recap. I liked the potential of Bad Boys For Life as an anchor, and it was the right anchor. It ended up as the Best Value and the best anchor across two screens. But the Perfect Cineplex ended up swinging for the fences and leaving a blank screen ( a $2 million deduction), while I filled mine with Parasite and Bombshell, and ended up $6.8 million off the pace. Close, but not close enough.

This week we get a pair of new films, a horror movie and a star-studded Guy Ritchie affair. But where is the value? And what will do well? That’s the real question. As always, if you think you’re better at the game than me, I encourage you to join me in a Fantasy Life App Blog league! You can join the league here. On to this week’s competition.

New at the Box Office:

The biggest new release is Ritchie’s latest gangster flick, The Gentlemen. This one seems to have done well with critics, currently boasting a 77 percent on Rotten Tomatoes. At $170 FML Bucks its the most expensive new release, but third most in the game. However, that doesn’t match up with projections, which show it in fifth place with $9.6 million. Box Office Pro sees fifth place with about $10.2 million, while Box Office Report sees $9.8 million and fourth place. This is a stay away to me.
The other new release is The Turning, a horror movie. These traditionally are review proof, which is great since this boasts just a 30 percent on Rotten Tomatoes. The film is $147 FML Bucks, fifth most, but Fantasy Movie League projects $12.2 million. Box Office Pro projects $10.8 and Box Office Report projects $9 million. While lower, for its price point this still might not end up a bad option.

The Search for the Best Value:

Last week Bad Boys For Life was the most costly, and the Best Value. It’s again the most costly at $353 FML Bucks, and it’s again projected in first. Fantasy Movie League sees $31.3 million, and Box Office Report sees $32 million. But Box Office Pro sees just $25.2 million. That should give us a moment of pause at its price point. If it falls off, then it will shed value.

Dolittle, last week’s other big new opening, was a critical and commercial failure. However, this week it’s an interesting value. At $167 FML Bucks, its the fourth most expensive. But some sites see it as high as the second highest grossing film of the week. Fantasy Movie League sees $12.4 million, while Box Office Pro sees $13.3 million and Box Office Report goes as high as $14.5 million. There is value there.

This Week’s Lineup:

This week I’m riding for Dolittle… in the game anyway. Still no desire to actually see it.

Dolittle x5
Jumanji: The Next Level
Knives Out
Frozen 2
