What's Next

Earlier this season, Tom Brady and Drew Brees were linked. They both passed Peyton Manning for the record in all time touchdown passes. Last weekend, they were linked again, as both fell short and lost in the Wild Card round despite being a three seed and a home favorite.

Now the question is what happens to these two quarterbacks who both have an uncertain future heading into the off-season. Let's consider each.

Tom Brady:
Brady has been a fixture in New England, playing there for 20 years, leading a dynasty with the Patriots and winning six Super Bowls. But it has seemed in recent years that the relationships there had become stale, or perhaps even soured. Though neither Brady nor anyone for the team would ever say anything. Brady, now, for the first time in his career is an unrestricted free agent. He'll also be 43-years-old by the time the next season hits. And there are plenty of questions in New England, including whether Josh McDaniels leaves. It certainly seems like he's headed for Cleveland. Then there's Brady, who has said he still has something to prove. The question is will he return, and better yet will he actually leave New England?

Prediction: I think McDaniels will take the Cleveland job, and I think that Brady is ready to move on. That seems to have been the vibe for a while. But where would he go? I think it's possible the Raiders come calling, looking to make a splash as they open a new stadium in Las Vegas. I think it's also possible the Chargers or Rams do the same, moving into the new stadium in Los Angeles. The question is what would appeal to Brady? That's harder to gauge. I think Brady will play again in 2020, but I also think he won't play in New England, which feels weird to say.

Drew Brees:
Brees broke the record for most touchdowns, as he's broken a number of records. And then he saw his team lose a heart-breaking game for the third straight year. I had thought there was a possibility that if Brees had a successful season, including a Super Bowl win, he'd retire and go out on top. That didn't happen. But Brees is a free agent now, as is his back up Teddy Bridgewater. So the question is, does Brees return, and is it with the Saints?

Prediction: I think this case is a little more clear than Brady. Brees is 41, so the big question is if he wants to come back. I could see Brees retiring after having had a great career. But if he does want to return, I can't see him playing anywhere but the Saints with Sean Payton.
