Broncos' 2020 Season, Round One Reactions

The NFL Draft took off last night, and it was certainly unlike any draft we've ever seen. It was also quite long. It was more than four hours to get through the picks, and dead in the center was the Broncos' selection.

Pre-draft there was a lot of speculation the Broncos liked Jerry Jeudy, the receiver out of Alabama. And there was a lot of talk Denver would move up to grab him, and that certainly seemed like something that would have to happen. But that's the funny thing about the NFL Draft, sometimes things just work out because you never know how the draft is going to fall.

And last night broke pretty well. The draft board fell into place and, all of a sudden, the Broncos had their pick of Jeudy or CeeDee Lamb at No. 15. They didn't have to move up, they didn't have to give up an asset, and yet they still got their guy. They went with Jeudy, who was always atop their board John Elway said.

Wide Receiver was a crucial need for Denver. While Courtland Sutton is there, and looks like a No. 1, and the Broncos have Noah Fant at tight end, the rest of the receiving corps is a bit of a mystery. DaeSean Hamilton showed some signs of ability in his rookie year, but last year was a disappointment. Tim Patrick has flashed at times, but he's far from a lock. The Broncos have looked at bringing back Demaryius Thomas, but that would be more of a mentorship thing at this point. Jeudy is a bonafide weapon for the future.

He played three years for Alabama, and after catching 14 passes for 264 yards and two touchdowns as a freshman, he took off in his sophomore season. Jeudy posted 68 receptions for 1,315 yards and 14 TDs. Last year, Jeudy added 77 receptions for 1,153 yards and 10 TDs. The Broncos have to be hoping he bring some of that production to the offense as they look for Drew Lock and Fant to take year to leaps, Melvin Gordon and Phillip Lindsay to run strong, and the team to be in position to contend for the playoffs.

Jeudy was viewed as a top receiver prospect coming into the draft, and with a good landing spot, he also figures to be the top receiver in fantasy rookie drafts, too.

Now that the Broncos have addressed receiver, the focus should shift to offensive line, cornerback, and defensive depth all around. We'll see what the Broncos get with their four Day 2 picks!
