2020 Broncos' Season, Linebackers

Now that the draft is over, and while we have some time to fill before teams come back, it's time to once again look at the positional units the Broncos have assembled for 2020. Today I'm continuing with the linebacker group.

Linebackers:
On the Roster:
Von Miller, Bradley Chubb, Todd Davis, Alexander Johnson, Malik Reed, Justin Hollins, Josey Jewell,  Jeremiah Attaochu, Josh Watson, Joe Jones, Malik Carney, Justin Strnad, Derrek Tuszka, and Tre' Crawford

About: In a 3-4 defense, the linebackers are the heart of the attack, and that's true for Denver. Last year, in Vic Fangio's first with the Broncos, there was great excitement to see what he'd do with Von Miller and Bradley Chubb. Then Chubb got hurt. But the hope remains for this season and Chubb returns. In the middle, the Broncos appeared to find an answer in Johnson, who figures to start alongside Davis. That gives the Broncos a solid starting group of Chubb and Miller outside, then Davis and Johnson inside. And the team still has a lot of depth at the position, which is a blessing and a curse. The team has 14 players on the roster, and you figure they will keep between eight and 10 players at the position. That means some tough cuts will come, up to and including some of the rookies and young talent they brought in. Plus you never know who might impress in the pre-season. I think there is a group that includes Carney, Strnad, Tuszka, Crawford, Watson and Jewell who will likely be playing to assure themselves a roster spot.

Early Roster Predictions: So with those four--Miller, Chubb, Johnson and Davis--figuring to be starters, who are the other four to six folks that will make the roster. Attaochu was resigned to add depth to the outside and a weapon, and Reed seemed to prove himself last year. I think they're likely to make it. I also liked what Hollins brought as a rookie, and I think he's likely in the group, too. The rest of the group I think is in contention is Jewell, who still has some promise but doesn't fit this system as well, Strnad, the promising rookie, and Jones, who is a special teams ace. I think it's possible the Broncos keep all 10, but it's also possible that they only keep nine and that makes for a harder cut.
