Best of the Decade, No. 11

Over the next 25 weeks I'll be rolling out my favorite films of the last decade. This is, as all lists of this kind, personal selections. Agree, disagree, make a comment and share your thoughts!

No. 11 Dunkirk (2017)
Starring
: Fionn Whitehead, Tom Hardy, Harry Styles, and Kenneth Branagh
Director: Christopher Nolan
Academy Award Nominations: 8
Academy Award Wins: 3 (Best Editing, Best Sound Editing, Best Sound Mixing)
About: I love Nolan as a filmmaker. He's made some of the best films of the last two decades, and clearly for me "Dunkirk" is added to that list. While I loved the technique and story of "1917," which was released in 2019, "Dunkirk" is the film that made this list. There is a lot to like about the production and storytelling here. There is a strong cast that gives good performances, but the star here is the technique and the story. Nolan does some interesting things with a timeline in trying to tell this important story of a crucial moment in World War II that is a big part of the British experience of the war. I remember seeing this film for the first time in theaters, when I was down in Texas. It was such an incredible and moving experience, and Nolan is the rare filmmaker working today that wants to make the experience of seeing a film in a theater, where it was meant to be viewed, essential. And he does that well here. This is a film experience. It grabs you early and holds you all the way through, telling this story in a fascinating way that resonated with me and many others. And that's why it is on this list.
Rating: PG-13 for intense war experience and some language.
