Broncos' 2020 Season, Tight Ends

Now that the draft is over, and while we have some time to fill before teams come back, it's time to once again look at the positional units the Broncos have assembled for 2020. Today I'm continuing with the tight end group.

Tight Ends
On the Roster
: Noah Fant, Nick Vannett, Jeff Heuerman, Jake Butt, Troy Fumagali, Andrew Beck, Albert Okwuegbunam, Austin Fort

About: Last off-season, the Broncos found their tight end of the future as they took Noah Fant in the first round. That gave them quite a collection of tight ends, but Fant looked like he's on the way to being the real deal. And yet, the Broncos signed a tight end in free agency (Vannett) and drafted another (Albert O.), so now they have eight tight ends on the roster, which feels like a lot. The Broncos aren't likely to have a fullback, especially after trading Andy Janovich. So that likely means a different kind of role for tight ends. It's possible the Broncos could keep four or five on the roster, but that likely still means some tough cuts for a group that includes a lot of draft picks that came in with some promise. The lock for the roster is Fant, who is the team's up-and-coming receiving weapon. I think Vannett was added for a reason and Albert O has some promise as a receiver, and a familiarity with Drew Lock. Those all seem to bode well. So the real hard cuts might come among a few options the Broncos have taken over the years that haven't exactly panned out in the veteran Heuerman, Butt and Fumagali. It will also be interesting to see if Beck, who is a strong blocker that can play a fullback type role, lands on the team in that capacity. And that's what will be interesting to see during training camp and the pre-season.

Early Roster Projections: I think the Broncos will keep four players here, and those four will be Fant, Vannett, Beck and Albert O. I think it's possible a player like Fumagali could be added to the Practice Squad. But it feels like this will be the end of the line for Heuerman, which could create a savings, and Butt, who just could never get healthy.
