Revisiting the Academy Awards, 2006

As some of you know, I have been a frequent guest host on the Music City Drive In Movie podcast this summer. We've been looking at movies since 2000, re-nominating the Academy Awards. That got me thinking about the actual fields of the awards themselves. In a new weekly series, I'll be looking back at the last 40 years of Oscars and reviewing the choices at Best Picture, Best Director and the four acting categories.

2006:

Best Picture:
* The Departed
* Little Miss Sunshine
* Babel
* The Queen
* Letters from Iwo Jima

About: This was an interesting year. The Departed won Best Picture, and I'm sticking with that.

Best Director:
* Martin Scorsese
* Alejandro González Iñárritu
* Clint Eastwood
* Stephen Frears
* Paul Greengrass

About: Scorsese won this one. It's a good group of directors with some interesting films. That being said, I'm sticking with Scorsese.

Best Actor:
* Forest Whitaker
* Leonardo DiCaprio
* Ryan Gosling
* Peter O'Toole
* Will Smith

About: Whitaker won the award here and gives a powerful performance. The shame of this year was DiCaprio had two good performances. He got the nomination for Blood Diamond, but I'm still going DiCaprio.

Best Actress:
* Helen Mirren
* Penelope Cruz
* Meryl Streep
* Kate Winslet
* Judi Dench

About: Mirren was the winner here. I really liked Cruz in Volver and Winslet in Little Children, but ultimately sticking with Mirren.

Best Supporting Actor:
* Alan Arkin
* Jackie Earle Haley
* Eddie Murphy
* Mark Wahlberg
* Djimon Hounsou

About: Arkin got the win here. This was a LOADED group. It felt like Murphy should have been more at play here, and I would have loved to see him win. But I'm going with Haley, who was great in Little Children.

Best Supporting Actress:
* Jennifer Hudson
* Abigail Breslin
* Adriana Barraza
* Cate Blanchett
* Rinko Kikuchi

About: Hudson was the winner, and I'm sticking with here here.

That's a wrap for 2006. Check back next week for a look at 2007.
