Academy Award Preview: Acting Races

The Academy Awards will take place on Sunday, April 25. The nominees were announced on Monday, March 15. Between now and the awards, I'll be previewing the different races. Today I'm looking at the Acting Races.

Best Actress:
* Carey Mulligan, Promising Young Woman
* Frances McDormand, Nomadland
* Viola Davis, Ma Rainey's Black Bottom
* Andra Day, The United States vs. Billie Holiday
* Vanessa Kirby, Portrait of a Woman

About: This is the most wide open race in all the Oscars, and it's a good one, too. Mulligan, McDormand, Davis and Day have all won major awards in the run up to the Academy Awards, and it wouldn't be a surprise to hear their name, or Kirby's name called on Oscar night. That being said, Mulligan gave my favorite performance of the year in my favorite film of the year. She is who I want to win, and honestly I don't want to live in a world where she doesn't win.

Best Actor:
* Chadwick Boseman, Ma Rainey's Black Bottom
* Anthony Hopkins, The Father
* Steven Yeun, Minari
* Gary Oldman, Mank
* Riz Ahmed, Sound of Metal

About: This is another great group of five performers, and in a different year you could make a case for any of them. But Boseman passed away this year, and while his death isn't the reason he's nominated or will win, it gives him the final push. The possible spoilers here are Hopkins, who gave a great performance, and Yeun because of the momentum of his film. But I'd be shocked to hear anyone other than Boseman called on April 25.

Best Supporting Actor:
* Daniel Kaluuya
* LaKeith Stanfield
* Leslie Odom, Jr.
* Sacha Baron Cohen
* Paul Raci

About: This is also a great and diverse field with a clear front-runner in Kaluuya. My favorite performance in the group is Odom, and I'd love for him to win for the criminally under-rated One Night in Miami. But Kaluuya gives a powerful performance in a powerful film, and he should take the win here.

Best Supporting Actress:
* Yuh-Jung Youn, Minari
* Amanda Seyfried, Mank
* Olivia Coleman, The Father
* Glenn Close, Hillbilly Elegy
* Maria Bakalova, Borat Subsequent Moviefilm

About: This is an interesting group that, at one time, felt wide open. But some clarity has come with the recent string of wins from Youn. She gives a great performance and would be my choice here. I think she'll hear her name called on April 25.
