2021 Broncos' Season, Week 5

Week 5: Pittsburgh Steelers 27, Denver Broncos 19
Season Record: 3-2 (1-1 Home)
Key Play: In the fourth quarter with just seconds remaining and the Broncos trailing by eight, quarterback Teddy Bridewater looked to connect with Courtland Sutton in the end zone but was instead picked off by James Pierre to end the game.

Recap: The Broncos started 3-0 but most of us expected them to be 3-0. The real question was what would come after the soft start. The Broncos looked so good early that it seemed like optimism built. I hoped for a great showing against a middling Ravens team in Week 4, but the Broncos couldn't get it going. Then I hoped that the team would take advantage of a struggling and 1-3 Steelers' team in Week 5. Instead, the Pittsburgh pass offense came alive and Ben helped the team jump out to a sizeable lead. The Broncos' offense looked stale, but finally came alive to some degree in the Fourth Quarter. It was too little, too late in this game. The Broncos have a Week 6 battle with the Raiders, two teams that started 3-0 and now are 3-2. That will be a pressure packed game between two teams backed into a corner. The Broncos' need better health, better line play and probably a better quarterback. This isn't a dig against Teddy Bridgewater, but more an acknowledgement of his limitations. Overall, the biggest struggle might be the coaching staff itself. The season started with promise, yes, but that promise is quickly fading and the Broncos need to find answers before it's too late.

Game Balls:
* Courtland Sutton.
Sutton caught seven passes for 120 yards and a TD. He looks like a dominant force and one that needs the ball more.
* Javonte Williams. The rookie again had the play of the day on offense, rushing for 61 yards on eight carries. He needs more touches.
* Alexander Johnson. The middle linebacker recovered a huge fumble Sunday, the Broncos' lone turnover.

Lingering Questions:
* Blocking.
The Broncos' blocking needs to improve for this team to have a chance.
* Coaching. The Broncos' coaching in all three phases seems to hold the team back, particularly in close and competitive games.
