Top 5 Halloween Films

The latest film in the Halloween horror franchise, Halloween Kills, opens today in theaters and live on Peacock. I'm sure fans will be flocking to it no matter what, but with so many Halloween films out there, it might be fair to wonder whether we need another. (I've seen it, we don't.) Anyway, this marks the 12th film to carry the Halloween name that has been released with at least one more in the current series due to be released soon. Below are my Top 5 of the Halloween films that have been released.

5. Halloween II (1981)
About:
This was the first film to be titled Halloween II. It was the second of the films, this one carrying over the story we saw in the original. In his original idea, John Carpenter foresaw Halloween being an anthology series but the popularity of the first film led to a direct sequel, this one returning Jamie Lee Curtis and Donald Pleasance and setting the action in and about a hospital. Is it great? It's not. But it's decent.

4. Halloween III: Season of the Witch (1982)
About:
I mentioned above the original idea to have Halloween be an anthology franchise? Well, this one steers into that idea, launching a brand new story about druids and tainted Halloween masks. It's weird and dumb as hell. But, for some reason, I kind of enjoy it. It's the weird outlier in a franchise that quickly became all about Michael Myers.

3. Halloween H20 (1998)
About:
This one takes place, you guessed it, 20 years later. It finds Jamie Lee Curtis back, and her psychotic killer brother back on the hunt where she is working at a private boarding school. The cast includes Josh Hartnett and Michelle Williams, and this one works pretty well. It's a fun throw back anyway.

2. Halloween (2018)
About
: Forty years after the original, David Gordon Green helmed this sequel that finds Laurie Strode (Lee Curtis) as a recluse. If you'd been hunted by Myers, you probably would be, too. I thought this re-boot worked really well. It was a fun theater experience and made me excited about a return to the world. The second installment wasn't great but we'll see how things go in the epic finale showdown in 2022.

1. Halloween (1978)
About
: Of course, we come to the top of the heap, the film that started it all. It remains one of the best examples of the genre. It is a unique film that in part launched a genre and remains one of the most iconic horror films even 43 years later.
