Upcoming Releases: November, 2021

Here's a look at everything new dropping during a busy, busy November at the movies.

Tuesday, November 2:
Son of Monarchs (HBO Max)
: This one focuses on a Mexican biologist living in New York returns to his hometown nestled in the majestic monarch butterfly forests of Michoacán after many years. He's spurred by the death of his grandmother and has an awakening. This seems not uncoincidentally timed to Day of the Dead.

Wednesday, November 3:
The Harder They Fall (Netflix):
This Netflix western boasts a strong cast that includes Jonathan Majors and Idris Elba. It's based on a true story and drew strong response from its limited theatrical release.

Friday, November 5:
Eternals (Theaters):
The latest from the Marvel Cinematic Universe is from Best Director winner Chloe Zhao. It's an ambitious and different project that's drawn mixed critical reviews so far. But, it's Marvel, you know everyone is going to go and see it.

Spencer (Limited): Yet another look at the life of Princess Diana, this time played by Kristen Stewart. Both Stewart and the film have earned rave reviews and could be on track for Oscar consideration as audiences seemingly never tire of Royals watching.

Finch (Apple TV+): This one finds Tom Hanks as a robotics engineer weathering life during an apocalypse. Naturally, he builds a friend. While that sounds similar to past Hanks works, this one looks good and I think Apple has been knocking it out of the park.

The Electrical Life of Louis Wain (Amazon Prime): Louis Wain was an interesting character, spending time as an inventor, entrepreneur, and artist. This biopic stars Benedict Cumberbatch and lands on Amazon after a limited theatrical run.

Love Hard (Netflix): Netflix promised to have the biggest lineup of Christmas movies ever. This one finds a lady who is in LA and unlucky in love, Nina Dobrev, meeting a dream man on a dating app. He lives on the East Coast, and she decides to surprise him only to learn she's been catfished by Jimmy O. Yang. Having seen more than 100 Hallmark films, I believe sparks will still fly. Merry Christmas.

Wednesday, November 10:
Clifford the Big Red Dog (Theaters/Paramount+):
The eponymous dog of children's books gets his own feature film. It drops same day in Theaters and on Paramount+ so plenty of chances to catch a little Big Red.

Passing (Netflix): This film from Rebecca Hall is based on a novel and centers on two African-American friends (Tessa Thompson and Ruth Negga), one of whom is passing as white. This is a heavy subject and a film that many have loved since it made the festival rounds.

Friday, November 12:
Belfast (Theaters):
This one is likely a Best Picture contender. It comes from director Kenneth Branagh and focuses on the story of a boy's formative years in 1960s Ireland. It stars Jamie Dornan and Caitriona Balfe, shot in gorgeous black and white.

Love is Love is Love (Theaters): Three separate tales explore different facets of love and commitment. This is a series of shorts within a feature film.

Red Notice (Netflix): This spy action thriller for Netflix stars Gal Gadot, Ryan Reynolds and Dwayne Johnson. This one had a short theatrical run but figures to be a big draw for Netflix.

Home Sweet Home Alone (Disney+): You guessed it, this is a re-boot of sorts for the Home Alone franchise. This new one finds another kid, left alone, while his house becomes a target. I'm low-key pumped.

Mayor Pete (Amazon Prime): This documentary follows the rise of Mayor Pete Buttigieg as he campaigned for President. Because we all want to relive the 2020 Presidential Campaign.

Friday, November 19:
Ghostbusters: Afterlife (Theaters):
We finally get the release of a re-boot/sequel to the popular Ghostbusters franchise. This one sees Jason Reitman take over as director from his father, Ivan, and picks up years later with the grandchildren of the original ghostbusters in the center of the action. I'm pumped.

King Richard (Theaters/HBO Max): Will Smith takes the lead as the father of Venus and Serena Williams in a biopic that shows the tenacity and belief he showed in helping mold his daughters into tennis greats. This is a showcase for Smith who could well be in the Oscar conversation.

Tick, Tick...Boom! (Netflix): This one follows a young playwright names Jon (Andrew Garfield) as he tries to survive the pressure of life and outside forces while crafting a musical he hopes will be his big break. This one comes from Lin-Manuel Miranda and is the story behind the creation of the popular show Rent.

Wednesday, November 24:
House of Gucci (Theater):
The second theatrical release from Ridley Scott in as many months, this one is a biopic on the famous Gucci family. The cast includes Lady Gaga, Adam Driver, Al Pacino and Jared Leto, among others. This is certainly Oscar bait.

Encanto (Theaters): The first Disney animated film to get a theatrical only release in more than a year, this one tells the story of the Madrigals, who live hidden in the mountains of Colombia, in a magical house, in a vibrant town, in a wondrous, charmed place called an Encanto. This fun and brightly colored tale will be a great family addition for Thanksgiving weekend.

Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City (Theaters): The latest Resident Evil film, this one isn't a continuation of the franchise but a reboot. Without Mila Jovovich it will be interesting to see how people feel about this story and franchise which has been seen and done before.

Bruised (Netflix): After a short theatrical run, this drama lands on Netflix. It finds Halle Berry as a disgraced MMA fighter and mother working two jobs to get by. In order to secure a future for her family, she has to get back in the ring. This one is a redemption story for Thanksgiving.

Thursday, November 25:
The Beatles: Get Back (Disney+):
Just in time for Thanksgiving, Disney releases this documentary on the most famous of bands from director Peter Jackson.

Friday, November 26:
Licorice Pizza (Limited):
This is the latest film from acclaimed director Paul Thomas Anderson. It is set in the San Fernando Valley and follows a successful child actor in the 1970s.

Tuesday, November 30:
Summit of the Gods (Netflix):
The film follows Fukamachi, a photographer who finds a camera supposedly belonging to George Mallory, a mountaineer who went missing on Mount Everest, and goes on a mountain-climbing adventure along with his friend Habu Joji.
