Upcoming Releases: February, 2022

We made it through the first month of the new year. How is 2022 treating you? We didn't get a ton of big movie releases, and much of what we got was just OK. But February things start heating up, particularly over President's Day Weekend. Let's dive in!

Friday, February 4:
Moonfall (Theaters)
: The latest from Roland Emmerich finds the Earth in trouble again. This time the moon drops out of orbit and threatens to hit and destroy the earth, leaving a team to try and safeguard humanity. I love a good disaster film, so go ahead and count me in!

Jackass Forever (Theaters): I feel like they've been advertising this film forever, likely because of its many COVID delays. But the prank series film starring Johnny Knoxville is finally debuting the first Friday in February. If you liked the others, you're welcome.

Book of Love (Amazon Prime): This one centers on a popular English writer whose latest book has become a hit in Mexico. As he travels there, he soon learns the popularity is thanks to a racier take on the work courtesy of his translator. Sparks fly, I'm sure. 'Tis the season of love, and Amazon Prime wants to take full advantage.

The Worst Person in the World (Limited): This foreign language film was a festival hit in the Fall, mostly thanks to the lead performance from Renate Reinsve. Now it gets to be seen by wider audiences.

Thursday, February 10:
Kimi (HBO MAX):
Another Steven Soderberg film that's going direct to streaming on HBO Max. This one stars Zoe Kravitz as tech worker pulled into a bigger mystery. I'm intrigued.

Friday, February 11:
Death on the Nile (Theaters):
This film stars Kenneth Branagh as Hercule Poirot in another Agatha Christie mystery adaptation. Branagh directs again as well. This one has been oft delayed the past two years but we finally get to see his follow up to Murder on the Orient Express!

Marry Me (Theaters): It's Valentine's Weekend, so naturally we get a romantic comedy. This one stars Jennifer Lopez as a singer who, after her heart is broken, decides to marry a man (Owen Wilson) at her concert. Will they find love? It certainly seems that way. I like the casting here and the potential in the story.

Blacklight (Theaters): It seems Liam Neeson has entered the phase of his career where he only does B action films. That's the case with Blacklight, where he's a freelance operative with a shadowy past pulled into a new mystery.

The Sky is Everywhere (Limited, Apple TV+): This is a film also timed for Valentines Day. It isn't a comedy, but rather a romance centered on a teen reeling with the loss of a sibling when she meets a new guy at school that turns her grief on its head.

I Want You Back (Amazon Prime): This one finds Jenny Slate and Charlie Day as a pair of lonely hearts who recently saw long-term relationships come to an end. When they discover their exes are in new relationships, they team up to win them back. Will sparks fly? I'm guessing the answer is yes.

Tall Girl 2 (Netflix): This sequel picks up after the events of the first film as Jodi (Ava Michelle) is now quite popular and struggling with what to do with her newfound status. This will likely appeal to those who enjoyed the first go-around.

Friday, February 18:
Uncharted (Theaters):
This one is a based on the popular video game. Tom Holland takes the lead on the adventure with a cast that includes Mark Wahlberg. This figures to be one of the biggest releases of 2022 so far.

Dog (Theaters): The competing film for President's Day finds Channing Tatum as an Army Ranger looking to work his way back into service. He's tasked with getting a deceased Ranger's K-9 partner to the funeral on time, and it makes for an interesting and probably heart-warming road trip story.

Sneakerella (Disney+): This one is a fun and unique spin on the Cinderella story. It's a gender-flipped take on the classic fairy tale centered on a talented sneaker designer who is oppressed by his step-father and evil step brothers. This figures to be a bit of winter fun for the streamer.

Friday, February 25:
The Outfit (Theaters):
This one finds Mark Rylance as a tailor who makes clothes for the mob. He soon finds himself pulled into their war, can he find a way out? This is an action-packed adventure to end February.

The Desperate Hour (Theaters): This one has a lot to unpack. Naomi Watts stars as a recently widowed woman on a walk in the woods when she learns there's a shooting at her son's school. She desperately tries to make her way there to save her son. A lot of themes here, so I'll be curious to see how this one comes together.

The Devil's Light (Theaters): It wouldn't be a winter month without a horror movie release. In this one, a 25-year-old nun named Sister Ann performs exorcisms and wards off demons while combating forces that think it's only man's work. There's a lot to unpack here, but let's just say I remain skeptical this is a must-see experience.
