We Need to Talk About Boba

After two great seasons of The Mandalorian, fans were told we'd be Mando free in 2021 and, in fact, the next Star Wars series to bow would be The Book of Boba Fett. The spin-off, focused on bounty hunter Boba Fett (Temuera Morrison) and his right-hand woman Fennec Shand (Ming-Na Wen) as they tried to take over the criminal kingdom once ruled by Jabba the Hutt.

Both characters were introduced in The Mandalorian, and it made sense to spin-off and continue their story. From the pilot through the first  four episodes, the focus was on Boba in the present, and the journey to get to that moment. It was engaging and serviceable, featuring an interesting journey for a character that had mostly been on the sidelines in the Star Wars universe. But the big question was where was it all going.

Episodes five and six were arguably the best of the first season, and that had little to do with the title character and the supposed focus of the series. The fifth and sixth out brought back The Mandalorian, and Grogu, along with a host of other interesting and familiar faces. In fact, over those two weeks, Boba Fett was limited to a cameo appearance in his own series.

Even the finale, which wrapped up a number of storylines, felt like it was more focused on Mando and Grogu's reunion and part in the battle than on the focal characters. Don't get me wrong, it was fun and satisfying, but I don't know how I feel about The Book of Boba Fett, which is supposedly moving toward a second season.

I'm more excited for the third season of The Mandalorian, and for the Asokha Tano show as well. I enjoyed Boba Fett for what it is, but it's hard to say if a second season which focused solely on these characters and world would be satisfying. For now, that's a question that will remain open until the character returns in the future.
