2022 Broncos' Season: Free Agency Begins

The Broncos officially have a new quarterback. Last week the team agreed to a big deal for Russell Wilson, which became official on Wednesday. Wilson brings talent and a pedigree to a real position of need for Denver, while Teddy Bridgewater signed in Miami and Drew Lock headed to Seattle as part of the deal. But that's far from the only excitement for Denver, which has continued to work on the defensive side of the ball early in free agency.

The Broncos needed to work on the pass rush and defensive line, nailing both early in the process. The biggest signing was former Dallas Cowboys' defensive end Randy Gregory, who flipped from re-signing with the Cowboys to coming to Denver on a five-year, $70 million deal. Gregory has 15.5 sacks over the past three seasons and could provide some boost to the Broncos' pass rush, which still has Bradley Chubb and emerging player Jonathan Cooper.

Elsewhere on the defensive line, the Broncos agreed to terms with defensive tackle D.J. Jones on a three-year deal. Jones comes from the 49ers and should be an apt run-stuffer, giving the Broncos' line a lift. The Broncos needed the help after seeing Shelby Harris shipped to Seattle.

Not done with the work on defense, the Broncos agreed to terms with Josey Jewell on a two-year contract. Jewell has played for the Broncos since he was drafted in 2018. Injury limited him to two games in 2021, but as a starter in 2020 he had 113 tackles

Finally, the Broncos agreed to terms with tight end Eric Tomlinson, who previously played for the Ravens, and re-signed tackle Calvin Anderson. Anderson gives the line some depth and flexibility, while Tomlinson has been primarily a blocker in his five seasons. The Broncos sent tight end Noah Fant to Seattle as part of the package to acquire Russell Wilson, but still have Albert Okwuegbunam to lead the passing attack and hybrid TE/FB Andrew Beck to help with the offense. Tomlinson figures to be a road grader that will help in the run game.

Overall, it's a solid start for the Broncos, who continue to fill holes building toward the 2022 campaign.
