Best Picture Nominees: Belfast

On February 8 the Academy Award nominations were announced and 10 films were nominated for Best Picture. On March 27, the winners will be announced. Between now and then, I'll be looking at each of the nominees and considering their chances.

Belfast
Starring
: Jamie Dornan, Caitriona Balfe, Judi Dench, Ciaran Hinds, and Jude Hill
Director: Kenneth Branagh
Total Nominations: 7
Nominated For: Best Picture, Best Supporting Actor (Hinds), Best Supporting Actress (Dench), Best Director (Branagh), Best Original Screenplay, Best Original Song, Best Sound
About: This was another of my favorite movies. I think it has a strong chance in a number of categories, including acting, directing, music, screenplay and Best Picture. It's one of the strongest contenders and delivers a beautiful, personal tale. The performances are great. I was a little bummed that Dornan and Balfe didn't get acting consideration, but Hinds and Dench are great. Both should have a decent chance, though I don't think either is a favorite. The best shots for the film probably come in the screenplay and directing categories, along with Best Picture. I think it will most surely win at least  one Oscar, possibly more. I believe the Best Picture and Best Director awards will be split this year, likely between Belfast and The Power of the Dog. That should be something to watch heading into the Awards competition.
Rating: Rated PG-13 for some violence and strong language.
Verdict: Four and a half stars out of five
Where to Find It: Belfast is now playing in theaters and available on VOD.
