Best Picture Nominees: Drive My Car

On February 8 the Academy Award nominations were announced and 10 films were nominated for Best Picture. On March 27, the winners will be announced. Between now and then, I'll be looking at each of the nominees and considering their chances.

Drive My Car
Starring:
 Hidetoshi Nishijima and Tôko Miura
Director: Ryûsuke Hamaguchi
Total Nominations: 4
Nominated For: Best Picture, Best Director Hamaguchi, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best International Feature
About: It's not every year that a film in the International Feature competition makes the Best Picture field. But Drive My Car pulled off that feat. It also earned other accolades, showing its popularity with viewers and prospective voters. I think that bodes well for its chances of being an Oscar winner by the end of the night on March 27. Could it win Best Picture? It's certainly possible, especially in a post Parasite world. However, I think it's more likely the film is a strong contender in three categories and ends up easily winning the race for Best International Feature. In fact, if it didn't win in that race, I'd consider it an upset. In the Picture, Director and Adapted Screenplay categories it feels like a contender but I think other films ultimately grab the win. The being said, this film had a lot of beauty in its construction and storytelling, maximizing a three-hour run time to draw you in slowly and build to a beautiful concluding act. I hope more people seek it out, especially since it's drawn these nominations.
Rating: NA
Verdict: Three and a half stars out of five
Where to Find It: The film is playing in theaters and available to stream on HBO Max.
