Upcoming Releases: April 2022

April is another month with a packed schedule, including some bigger releases as we're on the cusp of the summer movie season. Check out all the new releases headed our way in April.

Friday, April 1:
Morbius (Theaters)
: This oft-delayed film is based on a Marvel character, adding to Sony's catalog of Marvel anti-hero films. Jared Leto takes the lead as a scientist who becomes his own experiment and gains some terrifying new abilities. We've seen the trailer for what feels like years, so I'm excited this is finally just coming out.

The Contractor (Theaters): Chris Pine takes the lead as a former Special Forces soldier who joins the private sector and gets into trouble on an overseas mission. This looks like the kind of action film that provides a nice escape this time of year.

You Won't Be Alone (Theaters): This horror film is set in a small Macedonian Village in the 1800s. Naomi Rapace takes a lead role. Horror films are popular throughout the year, so this should be a draw for horror fans.

Bubble (Netflix): This film feels a bit on the nose, focusing on a group of actors trapped in a hotel during a pandemic and trying to make a film. The cast includes Keegan-Michael Key, Fred Armisen, Leslie Mann and Pedro Pascal, among others.

Better Nate Than Ever (Disney+): This new musical comedy focuses on a 13-year-old with Broadway dreams. When he and a friend sneak off to New York, mischief ensues.

Friday, April 8:
Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (Theaters):
The video game icon is back for a second go-around, this time with a new sidekick and an adversary voiced by Idris Elba. Jim Carrey is also back, so expect this one to be a big hit with the popcorn flick crowd.

Ambulance (Theaters): The latest from Michael Bay is a heist drama starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Yahya Abdul-Mateen. It looks like a decent blend of action and drama, the rare Bay film going for more than one-liners and explosions.

All the Old Knives (Amazon Prime): The second Pine feature in April, this one finds him as a CIA Agent tasked with hunting down a traitor who spilled secrets. The film opens in limited theatrical release and on Amazon Prime the same day.

Wednesday, April 13:
Father Stu (Theaters):
This film is a biopic, featuring Mark Wahlberg as a lost soul who finds his place in the church. He goes on a journey of healing that inspires many. This one is ideally timed for release during Holy Week.

Friday, April 15:
Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore (Theaters):
The third Fantastic Beasts film finds Mads Mikkelsen as the nefarious Grindlewald and takes the action to Hogwarts as Dumbledore (Jude Law) joins Newt (Eddie Redmayne) in the fight. The first of these was fun, the second a drag. I'm hoping the third puts the franchise back on track.

Friday, April 22:
The Bad Guys (Theaters):
This is the second biggest family-friendly release of the month, an animated tale about a group of villains trying to turn over a new leaf. The trailer is hilarious and it looks like a potentially big hit.

The Northman (Theaters): This is a violent epic set in the time of Vikings. It features Alexander Skarsgard as a Viking who returns home for vengeance years after his family was attacked and his parents murdered. This looks like a dark and intriguing epic, one that will likely have mixed reactions.

The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent (Theaters): Nick Cage plays an exaggerated version of himself alongside stars like Tiffany Haddish and Pedro Pascal. It looks like it will be a fun surrealist farce.

Polar Bear (Disney+): Just in time for Earth Day, Disney Nature produces a new documentary, this time focused on Polar Bears, that drops on Disney+ to mark the occasion. I've enjoyed these films in the past and look forward to this one.

Along For the Ride (Netflix): This one sets up as a teen romance, based on the novel. But the biggest names in the cast are adults in Kate Bosworth, Dermot Mulroney and Andie McDowell.

Friday, April 29:
Memory (Theaters):
In the final Friday before the Summer Movie Season officially hits, Liam Neeson stars as an assassin who refuses an assignment and has to go on the run. Guy Pearce co-stars in yet another late career action film starring Neeson. We've seen this before (not this exact plot, but we know how it's going to go).
