Upcoming Releases: August 2022

We've reached August (almost), which means the end of summer. The first half of the month is usually full of some last high-octane thrills, while we start transitioning to different kinds of films by the end. What are you looking forward to this August? Check roster below and put some films on the checklist!

Friday, August 5:
Bullet Train (Theaters)
: This is probably the last of the big summer action releases, a film with a top cast set on a train full of assassins on a job. Brad Pitt leads the cast and the trailer makes it look like a heck of a ride.

Easter Sunday (Theaters): Jo Koy takes the lead in a film based on his comedy and experiences. It seems weird to have an Easter film released in August, but here we are.

Bodies Bodies Bodies (Theaters): A horror comedy set at a hurricane party, this one starring Pete Davidson, among others. Horror films do well no matter the time of year, so I suspect there will be an audience for this one.

Sharp Stick (Theaters): This one is directed by Lena Dunham and has gotten some mixed reviews. Launching on a crowded weekend at the end of summer likely won't help things.

Luck (Apple TV+): This animated film debuts on Apple TV+, which is on quite a run. It figures to be another film the streamer will use to try and make a run during awards season.

Prey (Disney+): This one is set in the Comanche nation 300 years earlier. It boasts a solid cast and looks to be something different and engaging for the Disney platform.

Thirteen Lives (Amazon Prime): Ron Howard directs this live-action biopic about the 2018 Thai cave rescues. Colin Farrell and Joel Edgerton are part of the cast. The story is gripping so I'm curious to see what this live-action film has to offer.

Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (Netflix): The turtles rise again, this time in an animated adventure that features a voice cast including Haley Joel Osment and Ben Schwartz. I'm curious to see this next iteration of a classic piece of my childhood.

They/Them (Peacock): Since every service has to have a film debuting this weekend, Peacock gets into the game with an LGBTQIA+ horror film starring Kevin Bacon. This could get lost in the shuffle, especially with a more high-profile horror film releasing in theaters.

Friday, August 12:
Inu-Oh (Theaters):
The animated tale comes to theaters nationwide. This will likely appeal to those who follow the property.

Mack & Rita (Theaters): This one is a magical romantic comedy with a complex plot twist. The cast includes Diane Keaton, which is promising, but this feels like a film that will be jumping through plenty of hoops.

Secret Headquarters (Paramount+): This one is more of a family friendly film that tries to capture on the current love of superhero fair. It seems like the kind of film that will make for a light summer stream.

Day Shift (Netflix): Jamie Foxx takes the lead as a mild-mannered dad who is hiding his true profession as a vampire hunter. This figures to have plenty of action.

Friday, August 19:
Beast (Theaters):
Idris Elba is a father taking his kids on an African adventure when they're attacked by an aggressive lion. Chaos ensues. The trailer is intriguing and this looks like a solid late-summer action film.

Orphan: First Kill (Paramount+): The latest installment in this horror franchise gets a straight-to-streaming debut. Eh, I'm not optimistic.

Friday, August 26:
The Invitation (Theaters):
Another August horror film, this one set at a lavish wedding and starring Nathalie Emmanuel.

Samaritan (Theaters): Sylvester Stallone plays a vigilante hero thought long dead who is lured out of retirement and back into action by a neighbor. A family-friendly action adventure with an action hero legend.

Me Time (Netflix): Kevin Hart and Mark Wahlberg star in this comedy about a stay-at-home dad who is lured into a wild weekend after re-connecting with an old friend. Hart shines in these breezy comedies, so I have no doubt this will be the same.

Wednesday, August 31:
Barbarian (Theaters):
A woman books a rental home in Detroit only to find she's not alone. This horror film caps the month with the nightmare of everyone who uses Vrbo.

Three Thousand Years of Longing (Theaters): George Miller writes and directs this tale of an academic (Tilda Swinton) who comes across a Djinn (Idris Elba) that grants her three wishes. I like the cast and the potential, even if not much has been made known about the film.
