2023 Broncos' Season, Free Agent Frenzy

The 2023 NFL Season has begun as the new league year began Wednesday. That means it's free agent season and the Broncos have wasted little time getting going in the free agent market. But what do the signings mean? Let's consider.

Improved Blocking

The Broncos' offensive line struggled some in 2022 and it's clear from the first blushes of Free Agency the team doesn't want to see that happen again. On the first day, the Broncos landed a huge deal with the best right tackle on the market, in former 49er Mike McGlinchey, and a top guard in former Raven Ben Powers. McGlinchey comes on a five-year deal, while Powers comes on a four-year deal. Both figure to give the Broncos a boost on the line, playing alongside Garrett Bolles and Quinn Meinerz.

In addition, the Broncos added tight end Chris Manhertz, who spent the past few years with the Jaguars. He is a blocking specialist who will likely help the run game.

Speaking of the run game, while the Broncos figure to be led by Javonte Williams, who is recovering from an ACL injury, the team added some depth and insurance, signing Samaje Perine to a two-year deal. Perine was a solid contributor to the Bengals last season, rushing and catching passes, scoring six touchdowns. He's also a good pass blocker. And that seems to be a big part of the theme so far, improving the blocking on offense.

A final offensive signing was quarterback Jarrett Stidham, who was signed to a two-year deal. Stidham began with the Patriots before spending the 2022 season with the Raiders, even starting the final two games of the season. That led to the him signing with Denver, providing better depth behind Russell Wilson.

Defensive Pieces

The Broncos also made some moves on defense. The first was re-signing Alex Singleton, the team's starting linebacker and leading tackler from 2022. He showed great as a starter and it makes sense the Broncos are bringing him back.

The Broncos lost defensive lineman Dre'Mont Jones to the Seahawks, but moved quickly to replace him with former Cardinal Zach Allen, a defensive end who played with new Defensive Coordinator Vance Joseph in Arizona. The Broncos also added cornerback Tremon Smith, who adds depth on defense but mostly provides a Special Teams boost.

Overall, it's a strong start as the Broncos use free agency to build their roster and depth since they will have a smaller footprint in the draft.
