Upcoming Releases, April 2023

If March brought us our first blockbusters of the year, April is the calm before the blockbuster storm of summer. Still, there's some big movies coming this month. Let's take a look.

Monday, April 3:
Pretty Baby: Brooke Shields (Hulu):
This documentary looks at the life and career of Shields. It bowed to positive feedback at film festivals and now gets a wider release.

Wednesday, April 5:
Air (Theaters):
This one takes us back to a time when Nike was trying to make it as a shoe company and did so by courting then unknown rookie Michael Jordan. The film pairs Ben Affleck and Matt Damon and looks like the most promising of the month.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie (Theaters): This animated film goes back to the Mario well. The trailer and buzz around the film aren't great. I'm not sold.

On A Wing and a Prayer (Prime Video): In this new Prime Video offering after a pilot dies mid-air, a passenger has to land the plane. This one features Heather Graham and Dennis Quaid and looks interesting.

Friday, April 7:
Paint (Theaters):
Owen Wilson takes the lead in this film about a painter on public radio who faces younger competition. This could be fun.

Chupa (Netflix): This new horror film takes on the legendary creature. I'm not sold.

Praise This (Peacock): A rare original film from Peacock, this is about a woman desperate to break into the music business. The streamer's original films haven't been great, but this looks interesting.

Friday, April 14:
Renfield (Theaters):
Nicholas Cage is Dracula to Nicholas Hoult, as his assistant desperate to get out from under his thumb. The trailers here look great, and this one could be fun.

Sweetwater (Theaters): A biopic about the first African-American player to play in the NBA. This looks like an engaging sports film.

The Pope's Exorcist (Theaters): An exorcism thriller starring Russell Crowe. Call me a skeptic, for now.

The Last Kingdom: Seven Kings Must Die (Netflix): This is a feature-film continuation of the series, which ran for five seasons. Doubtless it won't have incredibly broad appeal.

Thursday, April 20:
Kodachrome (Netflix):
Jason Sudeikis and Ed Harris star as father-son in this Shawn Levy comedy about a road trip as the Kodak plans to retire Kodachrome film. Could be some fun.

Quasi (Hulu): This latest original is another film adaptation of the legend about a humpback caught in a royal dispute. I'm on the fence.

Friday, April 21:
Evil Dead Rise (Theaters):
A re-boot/sequel of the Evil Dead franchise. The trailers are interesting and the early reviews are positive. Could be a boon for horror fans.

The Covenant (Theaters): From director Guy Ritchie, this one finds Jake Gyllenhaal as a soldier who travels back into a war zone to fight for the interpreter that saved his life. An interesting drama that could have some pathos.

Chevalier (Theaters): A biopic on the musician known as the Black Mozart. The trailers are compelling and this could be an interesting bit of counter-programming.

Ghosted (Apple TV+): A romantic comedy with action featuring Chris Evans and Ana de Armas. I'm already in.

Friday, April 28:
Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret (Theaters):
This is a big screen adaptation of the classic Judy Blume novel. It has a great cast and great trailer, making it a bit of late Spring fun.

Big George Foreman (Theaters): A biopic on the boxer and business man. This could be our second fascinating boxing film of the year.

Peter Pan & Wendy (Disney+): This is a live-action version of the classic story from J.M. Barrie. The trailer is interesting and this one has potential.
