2023 Broncos' Season, NFL Draft Recap

The first draft of the Sean Payton era is in the books. The Broncos entered the draft with five picks, none in the First or Second Round. They ended up making five picks, but that came as the result of a number of trades. Let's take a look at what they got.

Second Round: Marvin Mims, WR Oklahoma
About:
On paper receiver doesn't seem like a need. It probably isn't, but the long-term future of Jerry Jeudy, Courtland Sutton and K.J. Hamler seem to be in some doubt. So, the Broncos traded up to grab Mims. I like the player and the potential. It might not have a major year one impact, but Mims could be a part of what Payton wants to do on offense.

Third Round: Drew Sanders, ILB Arkansas
About:
Linebacker has seemingly been a need for a while. I like the tandem of Alex Singleton, who was re-signed, and Josey Jewell in 2022. But you always need depth. Sanders, who has range enough to play all over the field, provides that. This feels like a great pick that fills a need for the Broncos' defense.

Third Round: Riley Moss, CB Iowa
About
: The final pick on Day 2 was Moss, a versatile pass defender from Iowa. The Broncos moved on from Ronald Darby and that leaves a more open depth chart behind Patrick Surtain. This is another interesting pick, part of a solid first day of drafting for the Broncos.

Sixth Round: JL Skinner, S Boise State
About
: The Broncos didn't have a pick in the Fourth or Fifth Round thanks to trades made to grab their first three picks. But in the Sixth Round, they added another piece to the secondary. This makes sense in terms of adding depth and potential, especially with Kareem Jackson remaining unsigned.

Seventh Round: Alex Forsyth, C Oregon
About:
With their final draft pick, the Broncos added a center. This is another place of need, especially for depth on the offensive line. This is another solid pick that addresses need and makes the most of the limited draft resources.

In addition to the five picks, the Broncos made a trade with the Saints for tight end Adam Trautman. Trautman never really hit his stride after being a fairly high pick for the Saints. The Broncos have Greg Dulcich and Albert Okwuegbunam, but this adds competition and depth to the room.

Overall, it was an interesting and solid draft. I had thought the Broncos would address the running back position but that didn't happen. Perhaps that's a good sign for the healthy of Javonte Williams. Either way, I'm excited to be on the other side of the draft and begin looking at the Broncos' 2023 position groups!
