Upcoming Releases, June 2023

We've made it to June, which is a month full of large tent poll options and a few smaller films. Let's dive in to see what's coming.

Friday, June 2:
Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (Theaters):
The sequel to this animated feature that introduced Miles Morales as Spider-Man. I loved the original and I think this will be one of the better films of the month.

The Boogeyman (Theaters): A horror film centered on the concept of a literal Boogeyman. This is the stuff nightmares are made of.

Shooting Stars (Peacock): This new biopic is about LeBron James and his rise to the NBA. It's a big swing for Peacock, and is produced by James. I'm interested to see this one.

Friday, June 9:
Transformers: Rise of the Beasts (Theaters):
This is the seventh feature film in the expanded franchise. We get Optimus Prime back and some Transformers that look like pre-historic creatures. Not sure we need another Transformers film, but here we are.

Flamin' Hot (Disney+/Hulu): This is the origin story of Flamin' Hot Cheetos. It looks like a fun and engaging story about a product that has become an American snack food staple.

Friday, June 16:
The Flash (Theaters):
One of the final films of the current DC Extended Universe, this focuses on Ezra Miller's Flash and his quest to bring his parents back. I'm pumped to see Michael Keaton back as Batman and this has gotten excellent reviews.

Elemental (Theaters): The latest from Pixar, this one focuses on characters that are literally elements. Pixar films have become an annual tradition, and this is a somewhat promising concept.

The Blackening (Theaters): A horror parody about a group of Black characters trapped in a cabin with a killer on the loose. This looks like something that will appeal to horror and comedy fans.

Extraction 2 (Netflix): This is a sequel to the Chris Hemsworth-led action film from a few years ago. He's back in the lead despite his character having died in the original. Not sure how to feel about this...

Friday, June 23:
No Hard Feelings (Theaters):
Jennifer Lawrence is asked to seduce a shy young high school graduate before college. The trailer looks funny but the premise is a bit of a stretch.

Asteroid City (Theaters): The latest from Wes Anderson centers on travelers trapped in a roadside city by the arrival of aliens. It's got a loaded cast and looks like a lot of fun.

Wednesday, June 28:
Run Rabbit Run (Netflix):
This Australian horror film centers on a fertility doctor and made its debut at Sundance. Now it gets a release on Netflix. This could be a sneaky strong release for the streamer this summer.

Friday, June 30:
Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny (Theaters):
The surprise fifth Indiana Jones film, this one isn't directed by Steven Spielberg but does feature Harrison Ford. It opens in time for Fourth of July Weekend. I'm pumped.

Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken (Theaters): An animated feature about vicious mermaids and a heroic kraken infiltrating a high school. The trailer is fun and colorful, so consider me interested.
