Upcoming Releases, August 2023

We've made it to August, which is largely regarded as the end of summer. We will see some final summer-like features coming this month. Below is a look at what to expect!

Wednesday, August 2:
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem (Theaters):
This new take on the Turtles is an animated film from Seth Rogen, among others. The trailers look fun and this is a subject that feels ripe for a re-boot. I'm intrigued.

Friday, August 4:
The Meg 2: The Trench (Theaters):
It wouldn't be summer without a big creature feature. Here, we get a sequel to The Meg, returning Jason Statham to a battle with some killer sharks. I'm all in.

Shortcomings (Theaters): This romantic comedy from director Randall Park debuted at Sundance. It's a bittersweet watch but one that will offer a bit of late-summer counter-programming.

Thursday, August 10:
Love in Taipei (Paramount+):
A straight to streaming feature that's something of an international romance. This will likely fill a void for a certain demographic.

Friday, August 11:
Last Voyage of the Demeter (Theaters):
We've seen a lot of takes on Dracula, but this one heads to the ship that brought him to America. A horror film set in a pretty terrifying place. I'm intrigued.

The Pod Generation (Theaters): Another film that debuted at Sundance. This is a futuristic concept that features Chiwetel Ejiofor and Emilia Clarke. It seems intriguing.

Red, White, and Royal Blue (Prime Video): Based on the popular romance novel, this film is about a British prince and the son of the President of the United States falling in love. It doubtless has a built-in fanbase.

Heart of Stone (Netflix): This is an action film starring Gal Gadot. Gadot has proven she can lead a franchise but it remains to be seen if this one will fill the bill.

Friday, August 18:
Blue Beetle (Theaters):
This is another film from the D.C. Universe. This one is supposed to connect to the new D.C. Universe. I'm interested and excited to know little about a superhero film.

Strays (Theaters): A phenomenal voice cast in a film about some R-rated pets left behind. The trailers are all hilarious so I'm hoping for a bit of a good time.

Back on the Strip (Theaters): This is the tale of a Las Vegas magician. Little is has been released about the film, but I like J.B. Smoove so there's some potential here.

The Monkey King (Netflix): This animated feature brings some action to Netflix. The trailer is solid and this figures to have some counter-programming appeal.

Friday, August 25:
Gran Turismo (Theaters):
Delayed a couple weeks, this film is based on a true story. It focuses on a a video game enthusiast who breaks into the world of competitive auto racing. I'm hyped.

Golda (Theaters): It's a big week for Helen Mirren. In this first film, we see her playing Golda Meir is a biopic set during the war of 1973.

Whitebird (Theaters): Oft-delayed, this film is supposed finally coming out here. It features Mirren as a grandmother to one of the supporting characters from Wonder, giving her own story of abuse during World War II.

The Hill (Theaters): This is a faith-based film starring Dennis Quaid as a traveling pastor whose son, Ricky, is something of a baseball phenom. This is likely a film for a niche audience.

Vacation Friends 2 (Hulu): John Cena and Lil Rel Howery are back as unlikely friends formed on a wild vacation. The first one was amusing, so this should be too.

You Are So Not Invited to My Bat Mitzvah! (Netflix): A comedy from Adam Sandler. This one leans into his Jewish roots, looking at the seminal celebration of a young woman.
