2025 Broncos' Season, Week 4

Image
Week 4 : Denver Broncos 28, Cincinnati Bengals 3 Season Record : 2-2 (2-0 Home) Key Play : In the second quarter, after an interception in the Red Zone killed a scoring chance, the Broncos got the ball back with less than two minutes to play. Bo Nix connected with Courtland Sutton on a 20-yard touchdown strike to make it 21-3. Recap : Week 4 was a good result. After a somewhat shaky start allowing the Bengals to drive and score, and committing a few defensive penalties, the Broncos rallied and looked solid. Nix threw a costly interception in the Red Zone, which hurt. But it didn't lead to a score, and the Broncos rallied. The second half was uneven on offense, but the running game got going and Nix threw a second touchdown. It was a solid win that moved the team back to .500. It was a step in the right direction, but let's not get crazy. The Broncos have beaten a winless Titans team that might be the worst in the league and beat a poor Bengals team. Let's see how they do in...

Fall TV Roundup, Week 4

Image
We’re making our way through September and the release calendar is looking a little more crowded. But what of these new offerings is worth your time to check? Let this weekly post be your guide as I review the pilot and second episode of new series this Fall. Don’t see a new show listed below? Check previous weeks. Tuesdays: The Lowdown, Tuesdays at 10 p.m. on FX (Premiered September 23) About : This is the latest series from Sterlin Harjo, who created Reservation Dogs. This is a different kind of series, set in Tulsa, Oklahoma, and following Lee Raybon (Ethan Hawke). He owns a used bookstore that doesn’t have many customers or make much money. He also calls himself a Truthstorian as he investigates conspiracies for local publications. It’s the latter pursuit that lands him in some hot water when he stumbles into something unexpected. The first season is eight episodes, with the first two dropping on Tuesday night. It’s a fun construction and Hawke is great in the lead role. There is p...

Upcoming Releases, October 2025

Image
We've made it to October, which is a packed month full of big releases. We're deep into awards season now, so buckle up! Friday, October 3: The Smashing Machine (Theaters): This comes from Bennie Safdie and features Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt. This could be a good contender to kick off the month. The Lost Bus (Apple TV+): This film features Matthew McConaughey and America Ferrara. It got a limited theatrical release and generated some positive buzz. It's worth checking out. Steve (Netflix): This one features Cillian Murphy reunited with the director of his last feature. It's about a man on a mission, while also battling his personal demons. I'm intrigued. Friday, October 10: Roofman (Theaters): This one features Channing Tatum and Kirsten Dunst in a based-on-a-true-story romp. I love the cast and I love the trailers. This could be good. Tron: Ares (Theaters): The third Tron film, this one coming from a different director and featuring a cast led by Jared L...

1995 Rewind: Batman Forever

Image
It's hard to believe, but 1995 was 30 years ago. Over the next few weeks I'm going to be looking at some stand out films from 1995 that are turning 30 in 2025. Today, it's a turning point for Batman. Batman : Poor Edward. I had to save them both. You see, I'm both Bruce Wayne and Batman, not because I have to be, now, because I choose to be. Batman Forever Starring : Val Kilmer, Nicole Kidman, Chris O'Donnell, Tommy Lee Jones, and Jim Carrey Director: Joel Schumacher About : I love Batman as a character. He's my favorite superhero. By the time this was released, I was in my Batman phase. This was the first of the Batman movies I saw in the theater, and 14-year-old me still liked it. But, objectively, Kilmer was wrong for the part. He's the worst Batman and this is the worst Batman film. I know that's controversial and many won't agree, but there it is. Still, it's iconic for its cast and the over-the-top nature of the villains in this film. Plus...

The Director's Series: Michael Mann, No. 2

Image
Throughout 2025 I'm turning my focus to Directors. They help craft the vision on screen that makes a movie work. This year I'm looking at five favorite films from 18 directors I admire and 10 films directed by different women that I have enjoyed. Join me Fridays and Saturdays throughout 2025 as we take this journey. The Last of the Mohicans (1992) Starring : Daniel Day-Lewis and Madeleine Stowe Director : Michael Mann About : Mann has delivered some epics. Many of his epics are modern tales about cops. That has been true of many films on this list, too. But this one is a historical epic based on the story from James Fenimore Cooper. It features an incredible lead performance from Day-Lewis, who has worked with a couple directors on this list. He's great in the lead role. But this is a fierce and tense film. I really like the shots and the sequences here, and it's paired with an incredible score. The whole production really comes together into something fascinating and e...

The Director's Series: David Fincher, No. 2

Gone Girl (2014) Starring : Ben Affleck, Carrie Coon, Rosamund Pike, Tyler Perry, and Kim Dickens Director: David Fincher About : Fincher has given us plenty to think about as a director. That's certainly the case here, with this adaptation of Gillian Flynn's novel that she worked on herself. It's a fascinating tale that takes you through this twisty plot. The genius of it is that for the beginning of the film, you don't really know what to believe. When we start seeing things through Amy's eyes, things flip. Affleck and Coon are good here, but Pike is incredible. She's downright diabolical. But it's the way the whole thing is put togeth...

NFL Picks, Week 4

Week 3 had plenty of upsets, but I picked the wrong ones. Let's hope for better in Week 4! It was an interesting week for new releases as September comes toward a close. Below is a look at my take on all the new movies I saw this week. You can keep up with everything I’m watching by following me on Letterboxd @knighthawk7734. A Big Bold Beautiful Journey (Theaters) Starring: Colin Farrell and Margot Robbie Synopsis: I have enjoyed the first two feature films from the director Kogonada. His latest is a romance and an emotional journey. We follow David (Farrell) and Sarah (Robbie) as they meet at a wedding and then end up going on a journey. It’s a strange journey that takes them through key moments from their past. Can they get over their past trauma and find a way to move forward together? This is a beautifully shot and rendered film. There are some gorgeous sequences and some profound moments. I liked the way the film attempted to do something different and dig for emotional depth. I also liked the performances from Farrell and Robbie, who play off each other beautifully....

Fall TV Roundup, Week 3

Image
We’re making our way through September and that brings plenty of new Fall viewing options. While the big flood is still yet to come, there are still some interesting new series being released. But what of these new shows are worth your time to check out? Let this weekly post be your guide as I review the pilot and second episode of new series this Fall. Don’t see a new show below? Check previous weeks. Sundays: Reunion, Sundays at 9 p.m. on Showtime (Premiered September 14) About : This new series is an import from the United Kingdom. It stars Matthew Gurney as Daniel, a deaf man who was in prison for murder. He’s released in the pilot and now that he’s out of jail he’s reunited with his estranged daughter Carly (Lara Peake) and on a mission. It’s unclear, through the first two episodes, what precisely the mission is and what precisely led to him going to prison. But it’s clear the story doesn’t add up. This series is five episodes, each releasing Fridays on Paramount+ before airing Su...

Denver Broncos' Season, Week 3

Image
Week 3 : Los Angeles Chargers 23, Denver Broncos 20 Season Record: 1-2 (1-0 Home) Key Play: In the fourth quarter, with the game tied 20-20, Bo Nix dropped back and threw a deep pass for Courtland Sutton third down. The play missed and the Broncos punted. The Chargers ran out the clock and kicked the game-winning field goal. Recap: This has been a brutal three-game stretch for the Denver Broncos and fans of the Broncos. Week 1 they got a win, but it was ugly. Week 2, they got a loss and it was ugly and controversial. Week 3 it was ugly and just plain deflating. Bo Nix missed what felt like every deep ball he threw, many of which were wide open. That's a problem. The offense is inconsistent. The defense has been inconsistent. And the team has been plagued by penalties. All of that is a problem, and one the Broncos need to correct quickly. With Sunday's loss, the Broncos are two games behind the undefeated Chargers. It's a bad look but the Broncos don't have time to wa...

1995 Rewind: Babe

Image
It's hard to believe, but 1995 was 30 years ago. Over the next few weeks I'm going to be looking at some stand out films from 1995 that are turning 30 in 2025. Today, it's a wonder pig. Farmer Hoggett : That'll do, pig. Babe Starring : James Cromwell Director : Chris Noonan About : Today, we look at a delightful and fun film, Babe . Cromwell is probably the biggest star we see in the film, though there's a strong voice cast. This is a fun film and one that's good for the whole family. It's an adorable addition to the landscape of films from 1995, which is why it makes the list for me. If you need a smile, Babe will do it.

The Director's Series: Alfred Hitchcock, No. 2

The Birds (1963) Starring : Rod Taylor, Tippi Hedren, Jessica Tandy, Suzanne Pleshette, and Veronica Cartwright Director : Alfred Hitchcock About : I first saw this film when I was young. We lived on the coast of California. The idea that the birds all around might just attack left me terrified. As an adult, I still love the film. The performances are strong and the way the story builds and the tension builds is intense. The discussions and the sequences in the film are great. Hedren is wonderful in the lead role, too. I love her back-and-forth with Pleshette, and some of the great shots in the film. It's a classic for a reason.

The Director's Series: Clint Eastwood, No. 2

Mystic River (2003) Starring : Sean Penn, Kevin Bacon, Tim Robbins, Marcia Gay Harden, and Laura Linney Director : Clint Eastwood About : Eastwood has had a long career both as an actor and a director. When we hit this stretch in the early 2000s, I think he hit his apex as a director. This is one of the rare films he's done that he's not in, but he delivers a beautiful and powerful story. The performances here are excellent, but it's the story and the way it unfolds with the visuals and score that stick with you. Denis Lehane crafted the story, with Brian Helgeland working on the screenplay. But it's the way Eastwood puts it all together, with some i...

My Week 2 picks were solid in both formats. Let's see if I can remain hot in Week 3! We’re into September and we’re seeing a flood of new films, including some highly anticipated new films. Below is a look at all the new films I saw this week. You can keep up with everything I’m watching by following me on Letterboxd @knighthawk7734. Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale (Theaters) Starring : Laura Carmichael, Elizabeth McGovern, Hugh Bonneville, and Michelle Dockery Synopsis : Endings are tricky. We first met the Crawley family in 2010 as the series began with the sinking of the Titanic. Through five seasons, we moved through years of triumphs and tragedy, with the series drawing to a close in 2015. Since that time, we’ve kept up with the characters and events through a series of movies. The first debuted in 2019 with a follow up, the final appearance for star Maggie Smith, in 2022. And now, three years later, we get the third and final film. It’s a last chance to catch up with these characters we’ve followed for 15 years as the Crawley family—and the rest of the world—hits...

Fall TV Roundup, Week 2

Image
We’re making our way through September, which means into the heart of the Fall TV launch. We aren’t quite at the network launch yet, but we still have some interesting new shows. Which of them, however, are worth your time to check out? Let this weekly post be your guide as I review the pilot and second episode of new series this Fall. Don’t see a new show listed below, check previous weeks. Sundays: Task, Sundays at 9 p.m. on HBO (Premiered September 7) About : This new series from Brad Ingelsby focuses an FBI task force led by a troubled agent (Mark Ruffalo) and the crew of thieves hitting stash houses led by a father (Mark Pelphrey) trying to make a life for his kids and his niece (Emilia Jones). The pilot moved at a good pace, creating an interesting world. The second episode dove deeper into the case, the characters, the world, and the backstories. I thought it was incredibly moving and emotionally engaging, which is a good sign for this seven-episode series. I loved the second ep...

2025 Broncos' Season, Week 2

Image
Week 2 : Indianapolis Colts 29, Denver Broncos 28 Season Record: 1-1 (1-0 Home) Key Play : In the Fourth Quarter, with time expired, Spencer Shrader made a 45-yard field goal on an untimed down to give the Colts the win. Recap : For the past few years, the defense has been the best and most reliable part of the Broncos' roster. On Sunday, it didn't feel like that. The offense played better, though still not perfect. But the defense allowed more than 160 yards to Jonathan Taylor while Daniel jones threw for more than 300 yards. The Colts offense looked good and did enough to get the win. When the Broncos can finally get the defense and the offense together, it's going to be something to see. Until then, the Broncos are a disappointing 1-1 and now head to battle the Los Angeles Chargers. Let's hope they find their defense along the way. Game Balls: * Troy Franklin: The second-year receiver looked good, going for eight receptions for 84 yards and a touchdown. * J.K. Dobb...

1995 Rewind: While You Were Sleeping

Image
It's hard to believe, but 1995 was 30 years ago. Over the next few weeks I'm going to be looking at some stand out films from 1995 that are turning 30 in 2025. Today, it's a romantic comedy from the queen. Lucy : [to a comatose Peter] Do you believe in love at first sight? Nah, I betcha don't, you're probably too sensible for that. Or have you ever, like, seen somebody, and you knew that, if only that person *really* knew you, they would, well, they would of course dump the perfect model that they were with, and realize that *you* were the one that they wanted to, just, grow old with? Have you ever fallen in love with someone you haven't even talked to? Have you ever been so alone you spend the night confusing a man in a coma? While You Were Sleeping Starring : Sandra Bullock, Bill Pullman, Peter Gallagher, and Peter Boyle Director : Jon Turteltaub About : There are a few films that helped set Sandra Bullock up as the queen of romantic comedies. We see that here...

The Director's Series: Greta Gerwig, Barbie

Barbie (2023) Starring : Margot Robbie, and Ryan Gosling Director : Greta Gerwig About: This was one of the best films from 2023. It was a masterpiece. It was deeply moving. It was expertly crafted. It was a revelation. And it was surprising how well the film turned out considering it was based on a toy. That's the showcase and skill of Gerwig, who has delivered some exceptional films in her career. There were a couple to consider outside of Barbie for this list, but none of them are quite this good. This was an incredible film and a great showcase for Gerwig's talent as a storyteller.

The Director's Series: Martin Scorsese, No. 2

The Color of Money (1986) Starring : Paul Newman and Tom Cruise Director : Martin Scorsese About: This probably isn't the first movie you think of when it comes to Scorsese. He's a director that has made a reputation with a different kind of film, many of which are on this list. And yet, this shows his skill. This is a sequel to the 1955 film starring Newman, who returns as an older version of the character. Here, he's paired with a young Tom Cruise who is coming into the prime of his career. It's a moving and engaging film, and one that's worth checking out if you've never seen it before.

NFL Picks, Week 2

Week 1 of the NFL Season is in the books. I did OK in both sets of picks, but I know I can do better. Let's dive in. NFL Picks, Week 1: Packers Over Commanders Bengals Over Jaguars Cowboys Over Giants Lions Over Bears Rams Over Titans Patriots Over Dolphins 49ers Over Saints Bills Over Jets Steelers Over Seahawks Ravens Over Browns Broncos Over Colts Cardinals Over Panthers Eagles Over Chiefs Vikings Over Falcons Buccaneers Over Texans Chargers Over Raiders Last Week : 10-6 NFL Picks Spread, Week 2 : Packers -3.5 Over Commanders Jaguars +3.5 Over Bengals Cowboys -5.5 Over Giants Bears +5.5 Over Lions Rams -5.5 Over Titans Patriots +1.5 Over Dolphins 49ers -4.5 Over Saints Bills -6.5 Over Jets Steelers -2.5 Over Seahawks Ravens -12.5 Over Browns Broncos -2.5 Over Colts Cardinals -6.5 Over Panthers Eagles -1.5 Over Chiefs Falcons +4.5 Over Vikings Buccaneers +2.5 Over Texans Chargers -3.5 Over Raiders Last Week : 8-8

The first week in September brought three interesting new releases—two in theaters and one on streaming. Below is my take on this week’s new releases. You can keep up with everything I’m watching by following me on Letterboxd @knighthawk7734. The American Southwest (Theaters) Synopsis : There are a lot of beautiful, fascinating, and magnificent places in the world. Often, documentaries help capture these places, and help transport viewers to places they’ve never seen or visited. These films can offer a greater appreciation for the natural environment while telling people about the wonders in these regions. But nature documentaries on the big screen have become rare. While we often still get them on National Geographic channel or sometimes around Earth Day, these glimpses into our wider world have become harder to come by. That’s what makes The American Southwest so fun. The new documentary, which follows the terrain around the Colorado River, is a big screen spectacle. It opens in thea...

Fall TV Roundup, Week 1

Image
We’re past Labor Day, which means the fall TV schedule is upon us. There will be plenty of new shows to check out, but which are worth your time? Let this weekly post be your guide as I look at the pilot and second episode of new series this Fall. Thursdays: NCIS: Tony & Ziva, Streaming Thursdays on Paramount+ (Premiered September 4) About : Fall is typically a time when the networks spring back to life with our traditional broadcast series. While that won’t take place for a couple weeks, we’re certainly in range as two of this week’s streaming releases feel like something right off the broadcast calendar. That includes this new NCIS spin-off, which bring back a couple classic and beloved characters. Ziva David (Cote de Pablo) and Tony DiNozzo (Michael Weatherly) were among the favorites on NCIS. Their characters were drawn to each other and had plenty of playful banter. But they last shared the screen together as these characters in 2013, when de Pablo left as a series regular. In...

2025 Broncos' Season, Week 1

Image
Week 1 : Denver Broncos 20, Tennessee Titans 12 Season Record : 1-0 (1-0 Home) Key Play: In the fourth quarter, with the Broncos up 13-12, rookie R.J. Harvey broke a run for 50 yards to set up a crucial Broncos score to boost the lead to eight. Recap : It wasn't pretty, but it was a win. The Broncos have plenty of expectation and pressure this year and that seemed to be a factor. Bo Nix struggled early, throwing interceptions and fumbling the ball. But he also delivered a beautiful touchdown pass to Courtland Sutton. In the end, the Broncos got some good plays from Evan Engram, Harvey, Sutton, and others as well as a suffocating performance on defense. It wasn't a great game and it wasn't the easy win that some thought would happen, but it's a win. Time to clean some things up and look forward to the next game against the Colts. Game Balls: * Courtland Sutton. The Broncos' best receiver and captain caught six passes for 61 yards and a touchdown, drawing a couple b...

1995 Rewind: Mallrats

Image
It's hard to believe, but 1995 was 30 years ago. Over the next few weeks I'm going to be looking at some stand out films from 1995 that are turning 30 in 2025. Today, it's a comedy from director Kevin Smith. Brodie : Listen, not a year goes by, not a year, that I don't hear about some escalator accident involving some bastard kid which could have easily been avoided had some parent - I don't care which one - but some parent conditioned him to fear and respect that escalator. Mallrats Starring : Jason Lee, Shannen Doherty, Claire Forlani, Jeremy London, and Michael Rooker Director : Kevin Smith About : Smith has delivered some iconic films. There are a lot of them that have spoken to people, especially in his Jay and Silent Bob run. Mallrats was the second of those films. It is the one that I have always loved the most. That might make me something of an outlier, but it just works for me. I first saw it when I was in college, but I've seen it dozens of times sin...

Rebuilding Paradise (2020) Director : Ron Howard About: This is an interesting and powerful film. It was one of my favorite films from the weird COVID year of 2020. This is one of the interesting things about Howard as a filmmaker. This list of five from him are diverse in style and tone. This is the only documentary on the list, and it speaks to Howard's diversity. It's also an incredible and incredibly powerful story.

The Director's Series: Quentin Tarantino, No. 2

This year I'm looking at five favorite films from 18 directors I admire and 10 films directed by different women that I have enjoyed. Join me Fridays and Saturdays throughout 2025 as we take this journey. Reservoir Dogs (1992) Starring: Harvey Keitel, Tim Roth, Michael Madsen, and Steve Buscemi Director: Quentin Tarantino About : This was Tarantino's first feature film, and it still holds up. It's the expansion of a short film you can find on YouTube. I enjoyed the short film, but it's the way this expanded that has always worked for me. It's mostly about the dialogue and the tense situations. The action of this film is often not seen. We see pieces in flashback as the truth of the story unfolds. And when you get to the ending, it's hard not to be all in. I also really enjoy the musical choices.

Labor Day weekend is often a slower time at the movies, but this Labor Day we get a couple of certified bangers in theaters. Below are my takes on this week’s movies. You can keep up with everything I’m watching by following me on Letterboxd @knighthawk7734. Caught Stealing (Theaters) Starring: Austin Butler, Zoe Kravitz, Matt Smith, and Regina King Synopsis: Sometimes we get pulled into things we don’t expect. The question is how we react when that happens. If we can keep our head, we can make our way out of it even when others crumble. That’s certainly an idea at the heart of Caught Stealing, a new film that opens nationwide on Friday. The film comes from director Darren Aronofsky. It’s based on the book from Charlie Huston, who crafted the screenplay. It’s the story of a former baseball standout who is a bit lost. He gets pulled into something he didn’t expect and ends up going on one wild ride. The film centers on Hank (Butler) who is living in a small apartment in New York City ...

Summer TV Roundup, Week 13

Image
Labor Day weekend marks the unofficial end of summer, especially when it comes to TV and movies. We didn’t get a lot of new shows this week, but it was the final dash before we launch into the premiers of Fall. So, what of these new shows are worth checking out? Let this weekly post be your guide as I look at the pilot and second episode of new shows this summer. Don’t see a new show listed below? Check previous weeks. Mondays: Lego Masters Jr., Mondays at 8 p.m. on FOX (Premiered August 18) About : This is basically a copy of the original series with a new host—Kelly Osbourne—a new Lego Master—previous contestant Boone—and teams of kids instead of adults. The challenges are a bit more kid-friendly, too, and each team has a celebrity adult attached. All that works fine, but it doesn’t account for how much harder it is to see kids struggle. The second episode featured not one but two tearful moments. One when a team melted down during the process, and one when our first team was elimina...

2025 NFL Playoff Predictions

Image
Below is my prediction for all 14 NFL playoff teams, who’ll meet in the Championship Games, and who will win the Super Bowl. Check back in February to see how it all shakes out! AFC Playoff Teams: No. 1: Buffalo Bills, AFC East Winner No. 2: Cincinnati Bengals, AFC North Winner No. 3: Houston Texans, AFC South Winner No. 4: Denver Broncos, AFC West Winner No. 5: Baltimore Ravens, Wild Card No. 6: Kansas City Chiefs, Wild Card No. 7: New England Patriots, Wild Card About: Every year we have a few teams that don’t make it back to the playoffs. That’s true of my AFC field this year. I don’t have the Chargers or Steelers making it back, though I think both finish above .500. I think the Jaguars finish over .500, too, but come up short. Instead, I have two from the AFC West, two from the AFC East, two from the AFC North, and the Houston Texans from the South. I think the Broncos and Chiefs will be neck-and-neck all year, with the Broncos getting the edge. I also like the Bengals to bounce ...
