Best of 2024, TV Series

Image
Today, I’m looking at my favorite TV Series of the year. Below is the Top 10 in ascending order. But first, let’s look at a few more that just missed the cut! No. 20: Abbott Elementary, Season 3 No. 19: Mistletoe Murders, Season 1 No. 18: Fallout, Season 1 No. 17: Only Murders in the Building, Season 4 No. 16: Lioness, Season 2 No. 15: The Day of the Jackal No. 14: The Diplomat, Season 2 No. 13: Fargo, Season 5 No. 12: Ripley No. 11: House of the Dragon, Season 2 No. 10: Mr & Mrs Smith, Season 1 (Prime Video) About: This featured Donald Glover and Maya Erskine in a small-screen story based on the film. This had a completely different take and ended up being a great exploration of these two people, their relationship, and their spy life. It had some ups-and-downs, but I loved it. No. 9: Black Doves, Season 1 (Netflix) About: There are a few spy tales on my list, including this six-episode Netflix series that dropped in December. It features Keira Knightly and Ben Whishaw in a grea...

2024 Broncos' Season, Week 17

Image
Week 17 : Cincinnati Bengals 30, Denver Broncos 24 Season Record : 9-7 (5-2 Home) Key Play : In Overtime, Joe Burrow connected with Tee Higgins on his third touchdown catch of the day, sealing the win. Recap : No guts, no glory. We've heard the adage before. We saw it in action Saturday as the Broncos elected to tie the game in regulation, losing in overtime. I thought the team should have gone for two and the win. Sean Peyton didn't, and the Broncos remain in post-season limbo. If they do win, it's likely a Wild Card game in Buffalo. But, still, you'd like to make it.  The Broncos have had win and your in as their scenario the past two weeks, dropping both. They get a third shot, but if they miss it could be the Bengals coming from 4-8 to make the playoffs. The Broncos are young but it's time for them to start stepping up. Will we see it in Week 18? I sure hope so! Game Balls: * Marvin Mims . The young receiver had a pair of huge touchdown grabs to help the Bronc...

Upcoming Releases, January 2025

Image
We've reached January. We're in a new year, but sometimes it will be hard to tell at theaters. This is a month about a few new releases--mostly evergreen horror--and some films from the tail end of 2024 finally getting a wide release. There's something for everyone! Let's dive in. Friday, January 3: The Damned (Theaters): I mentioned horror is evergreen, well here's a prime example. This horror movie is the first wide release of the year. Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl (Netflix): This is a 2024 release for awards, but it's getting a wide distribution on Netflix. It's a cute one that's great for the whole family. Friday, January 10: Better Man (Theaters): This biopic of Robbie Williams got a limited release on Christmas Day. Now, it's going wide for the masses! Den of Thieves 2: Pantera (Theaters): This is a bigger action film, a sequel to the film starring Gerard Butler from a few years ago. Expect plenty of shooting. Hard Truths (Thea...

As we make our way toward the new year, we’re getting a mixture of blockbuster films and films that have award aspirations. But are they any good? Below is my take on the new movies I saw this week. You can keep up with everything I’m watching by following me on Letterboxd @knighthawk7734. The Brutalist (Limited) Starring : Adrien Brody, Guy Pearce, and Felicity Jones Synopsis: This is an epic tale looking at life in pursuit of the American Dream in the aftermath of World War II. Laszlo Toth (Brody) was an architect of some renowned whose life and career was derailed by persecution during the war. After surviving the Holocaust and believing himself alone, he heads to New York in 1947. There, he reunites with his American cousin Attila (Alessandro Nivola), who owns a furniture store, has an American wife, and has left his Jewish faith behind. Attila gives Laszlo a place to stay, a job, and a reason for hope—letting him know his wife, Erzsebet (Jones), and niece, Zsofia (Raffey Ca...

Fall TV Roundup, Week 16

Image
We’re closing in on Christmas and that means this is the last set of new series making their debut in 2024. You might have some free time the next couple of weeks, but what of these new shows is worth your time? Let this weekly post be your guide as I look at the pilot and second episode of new scripted series, and occasional unscripted series, this Fall. Don’t see a new show listed below? Check previous weeks. Sundays: Dexter: Original Sin, Sundays at 10 p.m. on Showtime (Premiered December 13) About : This new series takes the action back to 1991, and even further in flashbacks, to show what life was like for Dexter Morgan (Patrick Gibson) when he first joined Miami Metro and became a serial killer under cover. Here, he’s living and working with his adopted father, Harry (Christian Slater). The rest of the cast includes famous faces like Patrick Dempsey and Sarah Michelle-Gellar, among others. I like Gibson here, as he’s doing a nice job capturing the essence of Michael C. Hall, who ...

2024 Denver Broncos' Season, Week 16

Image
Week 16 : Los Angeles Chargers 34, Denver Broncos 27 Season Record: 9-6 (5-2 Home) Key Play : In the Fourth Quarter, with the Chargers leading 27 to 24, Hassan Haskins caught a screen pass from Justin Herbert and went 34 yards for the touchdown, putting the game away. Recap : Thursday night presented a golden opportunity for the Broncos. A win would lock up a playoff spot and give them a leg up on a higher seed. For the first half, it looked good. The Broncos scored touchdowns on the first three drives. The problem was, the team couldn't sustain it. That ended up being their undoing as they were badly outplayed in the fourth quarter, leading to a loss. The Broncos were swept by the Chargers and lost to the Steelers and Ravens, meaning they'll loose every tie-breaker for teams in the Wild Card race. That means, while likely they make the playoffs, they'll be locked into the No. 7 seed. The hope is they can win one of the next two games, and get to 10 wins on the season. E...

1994 Rewind, The Santa Clause

Image
Films released in 1994 will turn 30 this year. Over the next few months, I'll be looking at some of the memorable films from that year, including some of my favorites. Today, it's a Christmas classic. Scott Calvin : Who gave you permission to tell Charlie there was no Santa Claus? I think if we're going to destroy our son's delusions, I should be a part of it. The Santa Clause Starring: Tim Allen, Judge Reinhold, Wendy Crewson, and Eric Lloyd Director: John Pasquin About: It's almost Christmas, so it makes sense that we wrap up this look at films from 1994 with The Santa Clause , a Christmas classic. It's about a single dad (Allen) who is having a disastrous Christmas hosting his son. When Santa ends up dead, he ends up having to take his place. It leads to a wild adventure that plays out over the next year. It's a fun story that spawned two sequels and a Disney+ series. I love Allen in the role and it's definitely worth checking out each year for t...

Favorite Animated Films, No. 1

Image
Animated Films have come a long way over the years. It's a genre and format that presents a wide range of styles and stories. This year, I'll be taking a look at my 50 favorite Animated Films, offering a new one from No. 50 to No. 1 each Saturday in 2024. Join along and feel free to add your own thoughts in the comments! Stan : That person who helps others simply because it should or must be done, and because it is the right thing to do, is indeed without a doubt, a real superhero. Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018) Starring : Shameik Moore, Jake Johnson, Hailee Steinfeld, Mahershala Ali, and Brian Tyree Henry Director: Bob Persichetti, Peter Ramsey, and Rodney Rothman About: We've seen the Spider-Man story told many times on film, but never like this. I didn't have much in the way of expectations for this film. But what I saw blew me away. It was one of my favorite films the year it was released and a worthy winner of the Oscar for animation. It's a groun...

Favorite Westerns, No. 1

Image
Do you like a good Western? It's a classic genre in film and this year I've decided to look at some of my favorite Westerns. So, join me each Friday as I count down my favorite Westerns from No. 50 to No. 1.  Ellis : What you got ain't nothin' new. This country's hard on people. You can't stop what's coming. It ain't all waiting on you. That's vanity. No Country For Old Men (2007) Starring : Tommy Lee Jones, Javier Bardem, Josh Brolin, Woody Harrelson, and Kelly Macdonald Director: Joel and Ethan Coen About: As we reach the top of this list, I have offered perhaps another unconventional choice. But, for me, it's one of the best films ever made. It's also one of my all time favorites. It's a beautifully crafted film that follows three central characters. It's not your typical Western film, but it definitely fits the genre. I love the back-and-forth of the characters and the exceptional writing, which draws you in and keeps you hooked...

As we make our way through December the flood of new movies continues, ranging from blockbusters, to streaming options, and those competing for awards. Below is a look at the new movies I saw this week. You can keep up with everything I’m watching by following me on Letterboxd @knighthawk7734. Carry-On (Netflix) Starring : Taron Egerton, Jason Bateman, Sofia Carson, and Danielle Deadwyler Synopsis : This new film on Netflix brings the action to an airport on Christmas. It’s a fun set up that delivers some fun action, too. It centers on a TSA Agent, Ethan Kopek (Egerton), who is at a career crossroads. His girlfriend, Nora (Carson), is pushing him to explore a promotion and to apply to the LAPD again. He’s not sure. On Christmas Day, he decides to take a shot. That earns him an upgraded slot on one of the busiest travel days of the year. Unfortunately, that puts him in the crosshairs of some bad men. One of whom (Bateman) slips him an earpiece. Fall TV Roundup, Week 15

Image
We’re rapidly closing in on Christmas and the end of the year. We don’t have many new shows left to debut this Fall, but you probably have even less in the way of free time. So, which of these new shows is worth the investment? Let this weekly post be your guide as I review the pilot and second episode of new scripted series this Fall. Don’t see a new show listed below? Check previous weeks. Sundays: Dexter: Original Sin, Sundays at 10 p.m. on Showtime (Premiered December 15) About : Showtime is having a moment with its new series The Agency, but at the same time it leans into its past to hold viewers. That’s the case with its latest, the second spin-off series from the world of Dexter. Naturally, this is a pre-cursor to another spin-off coming this summer. And, like the previous shows and the one to come, this features Michael C. Hall as the voice of Dexter Morgan. This time, we pick up the action where the sequel series left off with Dexter (Hall) nearing death. As he’s fading ...

2024 Broncos' Season, Week 15

Image
Week 15 : Denver Broncos 31, Indianapolis Colts 13 Season Record : 9-5 (5-2 Home) Key Play : In the third quarter, with the Colts leading 13-7, Jonathan Taylor broke free on a 41-yard run to the end zone. But he let go of the ball prior to crossing the goal line, turning a touchdown into a fumble and a touchback for the Broncos. Recap : Good teams find a way to win even when things aren't going there way. The Broncos came into a huge game with the Colts under a lot of pressure. They saw the Colts put up a great opening drive, and watched their own offense struggle. Bo Nix wasn't at his best, managing just 130 passing yards and tossing three interceptions. But, this team is resilient. Some great returns from Marvin Mims and a great performance from the defense kept them in the game and helped them take the lead. The Broncos won, taking another step toward a playoff berth. They also take a one-game lead on the Chargers in the Wild Card race. Both those things are huge with three ...

1994 Rewind, The Shawshank Redemption

Image
Films released in 1994 will turn 30 this year. Over the next few months, I'll be looking at some of the memorable films from that year, including some of my favorites. Today, it's an incredible drama. Red : [narrating] Sometimes it makes me sad, though... Andy being gone. I have to remind myself that some birds aren't meant to be caged. Their feathers are just too bright. And when they fly away, the part of you that knows it was a sin to lock them up DOES rejoice. But still, the place you live in is that much more drab and empty that they're gone. I guess I just miss my friend. The Shawshank Redemption Starring: Tim Robbins and Morgan Freeman Director : Frank Darabont About : This film is based on a short story from Stephen King. It's a beautiful story of friendship and hope in the midst of darkness. The performances from Robbins and Freeman are beautiful, as is the story of Red and Andy. I love the way Darabont tells this story and all its beats. It didn't win...

I love the Peanuts, and this special has endured for nearly 60 years because of the power of its narrative and production. It's a beautifully told story with some rich emotional moments. I love this story and I love the way it's put together. It...

Malcolm Reynolds : So me and mine gotta lay down and die... so you can live in your better world? The Operative: I'm not going to live there. He takes them on a camping trip with an old buddy when they stumble on a drug lab in the woods. A firefight ensues and his kids are taken. The cops want to blame Lee, but he breaks free and connects with the kingpin, Ryker, played by Freeman, whose son had been running things on the outside and now has Lee’s kids. He goes on a one-man mission to get them back and end the operations of this gang for good. This is the kind of plot we’ve seen play out before. We h...

We’re making our way toward the end of the end of the year. These next few weeks are the final push of new shows before we break for the holidays and come back in a brand-new year. 2024 Broncos' Season, Bye Week

Image
It's the bye week for the Broncos, which means no game. There's a couple of interesting things about this. First, it's Week 14, and the second Sunday in December, which feels late. In fact, it's the latest the bye week can be. Second, the Broncos are 8-5 and hold a two-game lead for the playoffs. That's something we haven't been able to say for more than a decade. So, with the Broncos coming back next week with only four games left, what can we expect from the rest of the season. Let's take a look at the big things to watch. The Playoff Race. The Broncos are in great shape to earn a Wild Card berth. The team can really lock things up with a Week 15 win over the Colts at home. But the Broncos also have the Chargers, Bengals and Chiefs on the schedule. With a few more wins, they could make a run in the AFC West, too. Rookie of the Year. Bo Nix has had a great year, but it could get even better. He's been hot of late and is among the front-runners for Off...

1994 Rewind: Pulp Fiction

Image
Films released in 1994 will turn 30 this year. Over the next few months, I'll be looking at some of the memorable films from that year, including some of my favorites. Today, it's an iconic film from Quentin Tarantino.   Jules: If my answers frighten you then you should cease asking scary questions. Pulp Fiction Starring : John Travolta, Samuel L. Jackson, Tim Roth, Ving Rhames, Bruce Willis, and Uma Thurman Director : Quentin Tarantino About : This was up for Best Picture, and for many it's the best of the films released in 1994. You could certainly make a case for it. That's why I have it here among a trio of films that competed for the top prize and are among the most enduring from the year. This is a unique action film from Tarantino. It's one of his best and you can see the way he weaves all these stories together and pulls out some great performances. A lot of people talked about Travolta, and he's good here, but I love Samuel L. Jackson in this role a ...

That was certainly the case for me with Sing 2 . This film is a sequel to a film that I enjoyed. But this one blew me away. The depth of emotion, the musical numbers, and the story all hit harder. It was an animated experience that I enjoyed a lot and stuck with me after I saw it. That's why it's earned a place here near the top of my list. It remains one of my favorite animated sto...

Thanksgiving weekend was a bit quieter, but we got a bevy of holiday-themed films. Below is my take on this week’s new releases. You can keep up with everything I’m watching by following me on Letterboxd @knighthawk7734. All We Imagine As Light (Theaters) Starring: Kani Kusruti, Divya Prabha, and Chhaya Kadam Synopsis: Every year we get a rich tapestry of stories that highlight people and places we don’t know well. These films from around the globe often tell beautifully intimate stories that stick with you after the credits roll. That’s the case with All We Imagine As Light, a film from India that is making a wider release in a number of places, such as Denver, this weekend. The film comes from writer/director Payal Kapadia and it’s the story of two friends and co-workers who are seeking more in life. It beautifully captures the story of these women—and many like them—while showcasing their city. In the film, Prabha (Kusruti) and Anu (Prabha) are nurses in Mumbai. They are also room...
